This brings to mind a comic in which Donald Duck kept yelling different spellings of âforeâ on a golf course and not understanding the corrections by his fellow player.
I once dropped out of a Hospital Week spelling bee (sponsored by the Medical Transcription team for some reason) because I thought they said âandrogenous,â and it was âandrogynous.â
Who knew that Doughnut vs Donut would turn out to be the line in the sand that it is? Or maybe itâs not, maybe itâs just a number of people I happen to know. Then again, maybe that Boston-based chain dropped its name by half to simply âDunkinâ â for a reason.
This is unusual for me, but while my brain favors the correct spelling, my gut is more comfortable with the butchered spelling, at least for the kind of doughnut/donuts people mostly buy today. If you take out the sugar and the fat, thereâs not much to them, so why spell it out? I donât buy or eat doughnuts of any kind very often, so Iâm happy to let the fighters fight while people eat whatever they want.
Although anyone in the doughnut camp who spells âall rightâ as one word with a single L, Iâm not taking seriously. Iâve got my line in the sand, too.
Iâve seen several different strips where a character claimed to âhearâ the different spelling of a word that sounds the same however itâs spelled. Canât recall what the word was on âFoxtrotâ, but on âZitsâ Jeremyâs girlfriend Sara told someone, âItâs Sara, without an âhâ. You said it with an âhâ.â

Some jokes work in the spoken form. Some jokes work in print. Sometimes the joke is in that the two donât always successfully interchange.

So what do you need if you have a dull native of Warsaw?
âŠ.. wait for it âŠ.

Polish polish. (Or, if you need to improve your language skills in their native tongue, youâll have to polish Polish.)

Once owned a Mister Donut shop where we sold doughnuts. Getting a kick out of the discussion.
