Deer hunters would be welcome in Hawaii (I think). Maui is being overrun by deer.

Don’t worry kid. Just go to the supermarket. It’s where meat is made.

As far back as the ‘60s, there was a clear distinction between the rural systems and the inner-city schools. Farm areas just closed since all the kids and many staff were going to be “sick" anyway. Big city folks didn’t understand what the seasons were.

They actually still do, a lot. Frazz needs to step out of his elitist “solo endurance sports are the only sports” bubble.

Too bad the young lady doesn’t have a name attached. Great art Jef. The barrette in her hair really set her drawing off, very nice touch. Once again!

The kid is right. Most moderns pay little attention to elders who either participated in or observed significant historical events. History doesn’t seem to interest them as much as gathering, using, and discarding. But this isn’t just a modern trend.

Antonio said, What’s past is prologue. [“The Tempest,” c1611, W. Shakespeare] And no doubt there is a quote from an ancient Greek on that same theme. But eventually we all come to the realization that the past has meaning for each of us.

Or perhaps, as T.S. Eliot wrote?

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time

    — “Little Gidding” (the last of his Four Quartets)

The old have been making her grandpa’s complaint since literally forever. There are quotes from the ancient Greek philosphers making broadly the same complaint.

Ah, the High Holidays here in Wisconsin. There are about as many hunters as there are residents of Milwaukee.

Deer season is different in different states. A friend of mine just got back last weekend from a hunting trip. Do not be afraid for the deer though. They are safe from him (not that he doesn’t try).

Perhaps ironically, hunting season rarely involves any hunting. It’s nearly always ambushing. So-called hunters will set up a blind and then wait. No hunting necessary.

I moved to Orygun, from IDeeho, in 1984. I have not hunted since the move. Every once in a while I do think about going back out, but then think better of it. I still shoot, but only at paper now.

I needed parts from a supplier in Wisconsin. The phone rang and rang, finally I got someone. I asked why no one was answering. “It’s deer season, eh?”

All of my land, beyond the house and yard, is heavily wooded and a haven for all manner of wildlife. These days, even with all the carnivores back there, the deer have become so populous and brazen they don’t even stop for a car on a noisy gravel road. I’ve concluded that they are the shmoo (Al Capp reference) of the animal kingdom. I don’t hunt (no patience) but I allow two hunters to use my land. Both of them (father&daughter) are bow-hunters. I can’t say that they do much to thin the herd, but I feel it’s more sporting. And they keep us in venison year-round.

“Not like they used to”. Depending on what you mean by “they”, it might’ve involved bows and arrows and 365 days a year.

Overrun by deer means there are no predators around and the ecosystem is not in balance. Where there are that many deer, there should be wolves, coyotes, big cats and bears. Remember when wolves were reintroduced in Yellowstone? The wolves have changed the soil, plant and grass growth, and the diversity of wildlife in the park. There are no predators in the Florida everglades for pythons. I want a pair of Anaconda boots.
