Dad: The #1 rule of Christmas lights: check 'em before you hang 'em. Luann: They're all working! Dad: The #2 rule of Christmas lights: They don't care about rules. Luann: These were made in anoy-yu, china.
Doctor Zarkov, Dale Arden, Prince Barin and I wish you all a Merry Saturnalia and a Happy new year.
Meanwhile, Frank should get some modern LED light strings. They should be on sale tomorrow. Xmas cards should also be on sale. That’s what I’m doing on Monday, going to get cards at half price or less.
The new thing in Southern California seems to be light projectors. A little dingus about the size of a coffee cup shines tiny points of light all over the front of the house and up in the trees. No strings of lights, no bulbs to burn out, and the projector is right there on the ground. Near as I can tell, it’s programmable, you can set it for red and green, or blue and white, a shifting rainbow effect or just assorted bright colors.

In the immortal words of John Lennon: “Happy Chrimble, one and all.”

Or, if you prefer a more Dickensian flavor, “God help us, every one!”
Those of us who are pushing the planting zones need those incandescent lights, especially in blue, which puts the least intrusive light into the night when we’re trying to sleep. Those and a frost covering will keep our orange trees alive in a freeze and all the nurseries tell their customers to buy them. Right now it’s 33F out at 10:30 pm and it’s 60 degrees under the multiple layers of frost covers and two strands of incandescent blue lights on my mango tree. Which has a ton of tiny new fruit on it—it’s happy.
Frank – look above the house. Millions of twinkling stars in the heavens above taking the place of the non functional, poorly crafted, high lead content Chinese strings of lights. A lot is to be said of natural beauty.
.
From our home to all of yours, to all who celebrate, we wish you a very Merry Christmas. To those who do not, we wish you a wonderful, peaceful day.
China is so large, with so many cities, towns, and villages, there just might be an anoy-u China! Meanwhile, to one and all: HAPPY CHRISTMAS, AND MERRY NEW YEAR.
This. This is my battle. Every. Frickin’. Year. Last year I had five sets that were bad when I took them out of storage. Luckily I’m the kind of guy that keeps receipts, and they have a five year guarantee. I took them all back, got five new sets, brought them home, and tested them. Two of the new sets were out. Back to the store, two more sets. Needless to say my seasonal joy was dwindling.
This year only two sets were out. Well, one and a half, anyway. I got replacement sets, but the weather turned unseasonably bad quickly so I wasn’t able to get them up in time for Christmas (I’m not fool enough to go up a ladder in a snow storm).
These were all LED lights by the way. The LED lights are the worst. Like the old mini lights the whole set will go out if one bulb does. The problem is not in the bulbs themselves, though, it’s in the connections in the bulb sockets. Water gets into the sockets of these so-called “outdoor” light sets and caused the contacts on the bulbs to corrode. Mini-lights use copper contacts which will last years outside. LED’s use steel contacts, which corrode very quickly. Since the lights are in a series circuit, one bad contact in one bulb will make the whole string go out (or a section of a larger set). Unlike mini-lights, though, LED’s are not easily removed from their sockets, making checking them to find the bad one nearly impossible.
Next year I’m going back to the old coal-burning, internal-combustion, electricity-chugging, global-warming-causing, full-size glass C9 incandescent lights. They’re cheap ($10 for a 20 foot set, instead of $25 for the LED sets) and at least with those one bad bulb won’t take a whole string out.
Obviously, i shoukd not have used the word “help” instead of “least disrupt” but most of you will get the idea.
.
The body DOES make its own melatonin and that is really the absolutely best form for you to have. You can encourage that by minimizing light exposure of your eyes at night, but if you must be around light then use amber.
.
Taking the forms of melatonin that are available to buy can carry some health risks, certain specific ones for some health conditions, as well as grogginess for anyone which can increase the risk of falls, so anyone thinking of taking melatonin should exercise the same cautions that you use for any medication or supplement and clear it with your physician first.
Oh, one more quick note: there are some plants used as food which contain melatonin (As i said, it is a very ancient hormone.) and consuming such food items has been demonstrated to reduce oxidative stress. For most peopke, do not consider the dose amounts in such food stuffs in the same way that you woukd supplements. Supplement use and medication use, including OTC meds, shoukd be run by physicians.
This is too true. I checked and re-checked the string of lights that went around my windows in front. Worked. Put them around the windows. Didn’t work. It’s almost like they’re aware of whether they’re just being tested or put in their final location, and adjust their behavior just to spite you.
And then there are the “translated” instructions. My favorite line on those is: “For indoor and outdoor use only.” LOL…man, that’s so limiting.
New Year’s Eve is coming. Will Gunther and Tiffany share a kiss? Will Les try to kiss Pru? Will Luann and Bernice spend it together, drinking egg nog and watching movies on TV? Will Toni and Brad finally emerge from their hotel room? Will TJ find romance? Will anybody find romance?
Arrrghhh, Go Comics is not allowing copy and paste right now and my thumb hit submit accidentally while i was checking something.
.
The readon the second med was okay for me for occassional use is because my glaucoma is not closed angle.
.
Also, two other vitamin C notes: no one megadosing it for a protracted time shoukd quit it cold turkey. After a long enough while the body adjusts and suddenly cutting it out sometimes results in Rebound Scurvey at normal doses till the body reregulates. Also, people going in for radiation treatments will be told to carefully avoid sources of C. This is very, very important since a number of hormonal malignancies preferentially uptake C and it shields them from the needed treatments making thevradiation far less effective for helping the patient. (Malignancies are gluttons; there are also nutritional oncology approaches designed for the spevific types and origins of malignancies which are geared to starve certain malignancies to render them more vulnerable to chemo. Those also starve normal cells but at a slower rate so the malignant cells are hurt far more.)
Nope. The archaic use of the terms midwinter and midsummer refer to the respective solstices. Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is an instance of this usage.
Good to know that the nightshift function on the newer ipads works well for when that time arrives. We use Flux on the Macbook for that currently, with good results. Yes, orangy (amber) is what to aim for to have the least disruption.
Frank. Next year, just LEAVE the elaborate Halloween decorations UP and LIT during the next Christmas Holidays. You’ ll get a LOT of ‘traffic’ next Christmas. Might even get interviewed on the 6 o’clock news…..,
First, check the fuse. Then bend the wire around a bit. The one thing that just can’t be prevented is small breaks in the wire that eventually creates that intermittent function.

“Test Now, Swear Later”
“Lights Out!”
“Socket To Me”
