Let me repeat what ANYFACE said just now, except in Mississippi Delta lingo: “that girl’s nose is so wide open you could drive a Peterbilt semi-tractor through it with the whole rig in the back”. Might she? And may he? Might she begin to steal/seduce him, and may he turn out to be worth it? Who knows? Maybe we’ll see. That smile and her whole body language is very hot to be trite, but true to my practiced Luannverse eye.
1. He just saw Bernice jump over a rainbow and he is beginning to question his sanity.
2. He realizes that Bernice’s statement/question of “I’ll turn on the burner. Sugar?” could be taken as a seductive double-entendre. He fears “tea” is just an appetizer for a full meal of Piro.
3. Piro just realized the Sun next to the rainbow he saw Bernice jump over, bore a remarkable resemblance to his old friend, Sun, whom he has not seen in awhile.
4. Piro has suddenly gotten the feeling that if Bernice were to leap in the air, she would expose her belly button (an innie) and her tongue (an outie) in mid leap.
5. Piro realizes that Bernice is wearing white socks between Labor Day and Memorial Day and he is immediately repulsed.
6. Piro is now holding Bernice’s notes and realized that they weigh 20 pounds and she had them bound. Suddenly he fears he will never leave Bernice’s dorm room alive.
Bernice may want to hold off on the endzone dance until after getting the touchdown, especially since she had a similar celebration when he agreed to do her silent film thing (27 May 2016 strip) and we all know how well that one turned out. I understand appreciating small victories, but that normally doesn’t apply when the defeats are all caused by self-sabotage. Then, it just becomes “jinxing it.” Especially due to the fact that thanks to her idiotic refusal to simply be honest about her intentions, he may not even be interested in her at all. So even this small premature celebration may end up being all for naught (after all, he agreed to stay to go over notes; it may not mean any more than that.) Right now all she should be focused on is finding out his feelings towards her, rather than once again counting chickens that haven’t hatched.
Don’t know if she’s dreaming or its really happening. he doesn’t even know whats going on. but he’s better for Bernice than Gunther so please Greg make it happen.
alt story: piro began this school year as a serious premed student who lived with his girlfriend. that relationship blew up leaving him with problems, thus the doc and sleeping on couches. he’s recovered to a point and is now focusing on grades and his future and does not want to mess things up again by getting a girlfriend. bernice, cool your jets, the future might get a lot better.
As far as we can see, Piro has no interest in anything beyond the notes and studying them. Bee may have her fantasy, but it sure seems that reality is going to be very different. Unless she roofies his tea, perish the thought….
The big unknown is how long Piro will stay. ‘Awhile’ could mean a lot of things. Going over that pile of notes could take a long time. Bernice may stretch it out. Or Piro might want to get out of there and study on his own after tea time is over. Or he might be behind in class and willing to listen to Bernice talk all night.
@2Goldfish, @GermanShepherd4ever, @Wizard, @et_alia: (1) There has not been the slightest hint that Piro is gay. (2) The Evanses wouldn’t go there twice, that arc has been done, and would be boring and unimaginative to repeat. (3) Many other possibilities fit better, including – it’s just Piro’s subdued temperament. (4) Ask yourselves why men being attracted to men come to mind whenever a man doesn’t opt to get immediately physical with a woman.
Most nights, Piro apparently doesn’t need to crash at someone else’s pad. And don’t we know that he seems to have a place of his own that he avoids when his roommate has a girlfriend over? Do others have a different take? What do we actually know?
You know when I was in college and was in a young woman’s dorm room for whatever stated purpose, we made a lot of things, but never tea ….Again I ask….why is this strip so G-rated? CHILDREN DON’T READ NEWSPAPER COMIC STRIPS IN THE 21ST CENTURY. Go ahead Evans and Evans, and push the morality envelope a little into territory that resembles reality…….
Piro, in my opinion, is a gentle soul. He is not overly focused, but the focus he has at the moment was concerning the notes. Bernice is being too obtuse in her interactions, and with Piro not being overly insightful at the moment, has no clue as to Bernice’s infatuation.
That said, I still believe that Piro could be interested in Bernice, but she needs to be more specific towards him for him to “get a clue”.
I look forward to (and hope) that we get to learn more details about Piro’s background. Of all the new characters, I feel he is currently at the top of being the most interesting to learn about. Second and third would be Nil and Jack. In my opinion, Dez would be fourth, and the the other “newbies” would all cluster in no apparent order as a distant last category….. not that they are bad, but at least as of yet, nothing overly interesting about them.
I’ve actually wondered whether Piro might be working undercover. I’m not sure that the crashing overnight in people’s dorm rooms would be a breach of professional ethics or not but I keep coming back to the idea that he might not be what he seems.
The unknown is still the mystery/danger factor here. Better to interact in a more open place, not alone in the girl’s dorm room, although he’s slept over in different rooms on many occasions without incident. “Take off your scarf, and make yourself comfortable” could be like opening Pandora’s Box. That scarf never comes off. Why? To hide a tattoo?
The impatience and shallowness of some commenters is getting a little tiresome, yet I promise to faithfully read your contributions. Good scriptwriters know that it is boring for relationships to be quickly consummated. Bernice really needs to find out more about Piro, whether she realizes it yet or not. The worst and least likely thing that Bernice can do is “to jump his bones”, which would be totally implausible and self-defeating if I understand Piro at all.

Piro says, “What? Oh. Yeah” This is because:

In the center panel, her shoes look like horrid gunboats.

Now, if we replace the period with a comma, it becomes, “I’ll turn on the burner, Sugar”
