Crisis averted! Now to the question of whether Luann will succumb to the invitation to skip class…

Long bow, Tara, or crossbow?

Tara looks just like Chewie in Lu’s mind there.

I hope Lu does not “bow” to pressure and stays on target! Skipping class is not so bad in and of itself, but I’m not sure illicit archery is a big enough “draw” for me.

I was at a fair recently, and due to limited space, they had to combine some displays in the same barn. One barn housed both Archery and Cats. Somehow that combination gave me a bad feeling.

That was unexpected.

“Archery!” Whew, that’s a relief.

Tara – “Hey Lu! Watch Me shoot an apple off that Guy’s Head! Here, hold My root beer!”

Luann – “Well Uh…, OKAY, I Guess….,”

Tara – “Hey Guy! Could You Help Me, Pretty, Pretty, Please?”

Les – “Sure, Babe! Whattaya got in Mind??”

And Tara gets out her armor – piercing arrows…

Then some flaming arrows.

.

And finally, some arrows with little nuclear warheads on them.

Alright….

Archery.

But notice even Luann is thinking Tara is ambidextrous.

So now we need Tara to explain that the school range is free this hour, so there is a timeframe reason to skip class. (Tomorrow.)

Luann says she is still going to class. (Friday)

Luann opens the door and there is nobody there with a “CLASS DISMISSED” on the board. (Saturday)

I don’t understand why the archery can’t be postponed – instead of the class…

I get it! Tara is a modern-day Robin Hood. She’s topped with red. She shoots arrows. And she steals from the rich and gives to the poor.

I don’t know if Tara is very sharp, they could take a stab at archery later, what’s the point to missing class?

I have to say, Luann’s mental image of “Tara Croft” looks pretty hot.

A lot of you were right, yesterday, with “shooting” being a misdirection. I figured it would be cameras, though.

Tara can only be a Level One Instructor unless she is 18.

Except “shooting”, when used on its own like that, means guns. When you’re using a bow it’s simply called “archery”. There was literally no reason for Tara to call it shooting except to have Luann get the wrong idea and pad the story for another day. Rather sloppy storytelling this week; I just hope it’s because the writer has something good on the way and just dropped the ball a bit.

Giving Luann the wrong idea was the purpose.

Rather than calling it sloppy storytelling, it is a well crafted storyline with a risky or ill advised midweek cliffhanger tag.

This comment list literally exploded yesterday.

There is an indoor air conditioned archery range a half mile away from where I live. I think I’ll go over there and see if people say “I like to shoot archery” or “I like to archery archery.”

Luann’s imagination has poor trigger discipline.

I figured it was going to be photography, but archery also works.

I knew it wouldn’t be guns since Luann is not the sort of comic to tackle that kind of subject.

Given yesterday’s comments, we’re looking at either the dodge of the largest bullet in comics history, or the fastest plot-change turnaround ever…

I wonder if Tara knows Geena Davis……. I’d love to meet her!

Funny, I finally fulfilled a bucket list item and took an archery lesson about 6 weeks ago. Loved it and am in the process of buying my own equipment. Once I got the hang of it, it was very relaxing.

I am now hearing the voice of Katie Crown in Tara.

I cna’t believe they are showing this. Bows and arrows are dangerous. They kill can kill people. We need to ban bows and arrows. Arrows kill. Arrows are made only for the purpose of killing. At least require background checks and licenses.

Fingers off the triggers.

Wonder if Tara is related to Jonathan Archer?  He was quite an Enterprising fellow…

It would seem that they could’ve been aiming for better ‘marks,’ at school.  But perhaps Tara’s ‘point’ will be ‘driven’ home during this outing.  Maybe  to find ‘balance’. For sure, though, there wil soon be plenty of… ‘tension’….

OMG, I love archery! Can’t wait until tomorrow!

I was a target shooter for many years. Also taught Junior Olympic Archery Development. My son was on ASU’s national championship team two years running. I shot both recurve and compound (I couldn’t pull a heavy enough bow to shoot the long distances in field archery without a compound.) Great sport.

I was also a competitive target shooter with a rifle starting in seventh grade. We actually had a rifle target range in the gymnasium, and a school team that competed statewide. I’m REALLY old.

Is this strip set in Communist Canada? I mean all Americans own guns, are comfortable with guns, and dream of killing things with them…..right? RIGHT?

Wonder if this place calls the cart people use to get around it in, the “Range Rover"?

I knew all the trepedatious commentary on what kind of illegal, dangerous, evil, horrible activity that the little bad witch Tara was going to try to get Luann to do was misdirected, and shows how people can be so negative. Being one who is generally not negative I always shake my head at this tendency, but the nuns told me years ago that there are two kinds of people, glass half full, and glass half empty. Being a community college instructor I have an ambivilant feeling about skipping class, but then I give student’s a chance to make up work, and things do happen; my job is to encourage growth and learning, not to be a fussbudget. Tara’s personality and addition to the strip is to include a bit more fun-loving, not within the usual Luannverse parameters friend for Luann. That should be fun, and crazy, but not all the horrible things half-empty people keep saying. Just like with TJ for example. What will be interesting is how Tara will interact with Bernice, or Tiffany, or the other usual suspects in Luannverse. But no she is not Ma Barker in training.

This Tara character doesn’t make sense. Such a flaky person taking the time to get an instructor certification, but doesn’t attend college classes? Don’t believe it. I think I’m ready to give up on this comic; too many unresolved arcs and too many uninteresting pseudosyllogisms.

Interesting that Tara is a “Certified Instructor”. That tells me she can apply herself when she want to.

Didn’t John Rambo use a bow?

Of course there are students in college to play and those who study!

And you can’t live it up AFTER classes? Why put yourself in a position to miss out on what’s important for something trivial. Balance her out, Luann.

While I am relieved this is not a long-term “gun” arc, I must say that I had been hoping for it to be “photography”. Archery…. while it is a fun hobby and avocation does not seem to me to offer a whole helluva lot of exciting avenues for Greg’s story to progress. I will try to take a wait-and-see attitude about it, but my gut reaction when it turned out to be archery was…. “Hmm, pretty hum-drum a choice.”

Archers…. again, do not get me wrong…. I find archery enjoyable myself, and even though it is has been 3-4 years since I have strung my bow and practiced, it is a good hobby. It just does not seem a particularly interesting comic fodder type hobby.

As a final aside, I guess thinking about archery (via Greg here) has put me a bit in the mood to get my gear out of the garage. Perhaps I will this weekend. I have only used a recurve bow in the past. But, I have heard that compound bows are enjoyable as well and typically require less skill. Is that other’s impression as well?

I see Luann & Pals are in tune with the nation’s zeitgeist.

On reflecting about the term :shooting:, in my own small world it could be shooting the rapids, shooting the bull (another term for chewing the fat), shooting basketball (Go Spurs Go), shooting the breeze, and probably a few others. Given the events of 2017, however, Luann reacted like most of us.

No one calls archery “shooting.” And “shoot archery” isn’t even a phrase. Fail.

Tara is weird; complicated; impulsive; headstrong; and at least a little wicked. She is everything that tapioca Luann is not. So, let them have some fun together. Each will Learn a Lesson from the other and come out of it all as an Improved Person.

I am disappointed in Luann. She is walking with Tara past the bio lab door. She is skipping class.

My brother, Howard, once asked if he could shoot my BB gun. Naturally, I said yes. When next I saw it, it was covered with nicks/dimples where he had used it as a target for his BB gun.

Sometimes I wonder about him.
