No, Shannon, that’s a screwdriver. How is Brad going to cut off the wire with that? (I hope Brad knows what he’s doing there; don’t want him electrocuted or something.)

I reeeeeeeeally HOPE Brad cut the power off to that outlet he’s about to work on. Else he’s gonna get a nasty surprise.

On a lighter note, Shannon is really growing. At this rate, she’ll be a teenager by the end of the week! ;)

I knew a kid like this – he used baby talk well beyond age eight. It was encouraged by a doting father, but it was annoying as heck. The kid slurred and squeaked his words, and no one could understand him, but it was still viewed as “cute” – boy, that was annoying!

I was wallpapering at my brother’s house because he has no patience at all. My nephew was about Shannon’s age (I remembered her name). He wanted to help and his mother said not to bother me. I had been a kid and knew better. I told her that certainly he could help. So I had him helping me for about 5 minutes till he found that it was not fun and drifted off to do something else. Problem solved.

Sure, Shannon’s trying to hand Brad the wrong tool. But who has taught her the right tool? That’s what Brad’s about to do. Learn by doing.

I always wanted to help Dad, my uncles, and my grandad when they were building stuff. Didn’t have a tool belt, but I learned which tool was which by “helping.” Never once did they give the impression I was not actually helping. Even stuck through the wallpaper removal, and got pretty good at removing it at my level, so they didn’t have to squat down there. By fourth grade, I was darn near expert at painting all the low stuff.

I really like the way Brad is guiding Shannon. She’s mightily improved from the first time we met her.

If Shannon were really growing up (as she appears to be, in terms of how she’s drawn), then she would not interpret Brad’s remarks as “Princess Tool Bear”, which is something a 4-year-old would do, and she would be old enough to sleep by herself in the living room whenever she comes to visit, making this whole construction project unnecessary.

When I was a kid in grade school, the longest word in the English language was “antidisestablishmentarianism”, and all us kids knew it. When my kids were growing up, there was a longer word, which I taught them. My youngest was in the first grade when his teacher asked the class to tell her some long words that they knew. He replied, “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.” By the end of the day, every kid in his class had learned that word.

Hmmmm … this seems to be a different Shannon visit from the last installment in this episode. Ole Smiley and his cockamamie laundry-room scheme are gone, and they appear to be working at a measured pace on a proper room. Brad is relaxed and rested and not stressed out. And he went out and got a tool belt. And they’re all wearing different clothes than in The Great Laundry Flood. The reboot was a good idea – the original version was going nowhere good.

A nice overall comic today. I like how both Brad and Toni are adopting a “parent-esque” role so successfully.

From the comments, the most “cringe-worthy” aspect people have commented on is the apparent dichotomy between Shannon’s perceived age and her misconstruing words that Brad says. In my opinion:

    1) Most likely, Greg is simply showing Shannon as a younger kid than she appears in the drawing. I think the simplest explanation is that Greg wanted this malapropic word interplay to be a “funny thing that kids say” moment.

    2) In the much less likely idea that this word exchange means something more “deep”, then I see two potential scenarios:

2a) Perhaps Shannon has some sort of hearing deficit that makes it difficult for her to hear distinctions in speech well. It could be she has some facet of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Again, I think it is very unlikely Greg would go this route… but who knows?

2b) Perhaps her difficulty is a reflection of not being exposed to much diversity in the words she hears. If this is the case, it could be a reflection that she and Jonah may only speak simply with each other, or it may be that the two of them do not talk much. Like in 2a, I doubt Greg is going in this direction either…. although I think it is a little bit more possible than Shannon having APD.

    * * *

As an aside…. I want to complement Sheriff today… I find the avocado color “wash” used for the background to be quite attractive. The wash of the color across the whole background, including things that could have been potentially colored more specifically (such as the sawhorse, for example) harkens back to an late-50s, early-60s style of coloration used in kids books that I always enjoyed and found very distinctive…. and almost “jazzy” in feel.

I like Shannon’s energy and her willingness to be a help. So many kids these days want to do nothing but watch the idiot box, be on their phones, or working out their finger and thumb muscles on their video games. I watch very little television – to me, the TV is a thief of my time.

    .

I do realize that television or the like is an outlet for many who are physically or medically confined – and I do feel for them, but until I reach that point …

Her mispronunciation/misunderstanding of words is rather forgivable here, and quaintly funny. Likely, ol’ Jonah wasn’t quite as attentive on her educating needs earlier. If a kid is a little ‘behind the ball’ at one point, you’d be surprised how quickly they can catch up to the rest in short order. Happens a lot – with the right support and environment.
