Joe: An autobiography? But you're only nine years old, Danae... Danae: I solved that little problem by inventing the prescient autobiography. It's my factual account of what my life will be, and I'm going to copy Mark Twain's marketing genius by holding it from publication for 100 years! Joe: Uh... wait... a factual account of what you haven't done? Danae: Yep! Joe: What would ever lead you to believe people are gullible enough to swallow that? Danae: Election results, mostly.

Danae has a point, Dad.

āMake no small plansā¦!ā (Attributed to Willis Polk, though popularly associated with Daniel Burnham.)
I had out-sized expectations when I was around Danaeās age. Let her have her ambitions, Dad. Reality will set in when enough time has passed.

So true, Danae. So true. So sadā¦.

What baslimthebegger said makes me want to ask, What happened to the erkert anyway? Did that storyline come to an end?

Uh, guysā¦ Twain never āheld it from publicationā. In fact, he had many excerpts published in his lifetime. Subsequently, some attempts were made at publication, the real problem being that it was an editorās nightmare. The 100th death anniversary release of Vol. 1 was a marketing gimmick of our own day.

Based upon her future projections, she should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize now! Maybe several: one for world peace, one for science, one for humanity (HA HA HA!) ā¦

those gullible people will swallow anything as long as they can wash it down with tea

Doesnāt this take place in Maine, home of the last two āmoderateā Repubican Senators?
puddleglum1066 about 14 years ago
People are gullible enough to swallow the media story that this election, or the one before it, or the one before that in some way involved āchange.ā Yeah, right: in this big āhouse-cleaningā election, 87 percent of the incumbents won re-election. Down from an average of 90 percent for the last forty years. Wow! What a change!
Never mind the Demoncraps and Repuglicants; the only party that matters in this country is the Incumbents.

I find it easier to make up the past than the future. Oh the things I think Iāve doneā¦.About the election, abused women usually go back to their abusers and hope things will be different this timeā¦
DesultoryPhillipic about 14 years ago
Irrefutably proven in the presidential election. A matter for conjecture in the past one, as of yet.
McCain would have been no better.
Justice22 about 14 years ago
Can we get an advance copy of the book? Iāll buy.
WaitingMan about 14 years ago
If McCain had been elected, weād have about 5 or 6 wars going by now.

Wiley, you have asked many times to leave politics out of the comment section. You have opened the door all by yourself this time. āElection resultsā indeed.
kpduty about 14 years ago
I can NOT believe that Iām being pulled into a political discussion! DEMOCRATS believe that āeveryone who disagrees with me must be stupidā??? Me thinks itās the other way around, as in āeveryone whose stupid disagrees with the Democratsā. (sheās smiling as she types) The problem today is nobody has a sense of humor (well, except for Wiley) and we donāt respect each otherās right to believe what we believe. I RESPECT your right to be stupid. I do. I really do.

I thought gocomics cancelled āState of the Unionā?
But I canāt resist one parting shot here: SIgn seen on a bumper sticker (wish I knew where to buy one!):
āDONāT BLAME ME, I DIDNāT VOTE FOR HIM!ā

I shouldnāt have to explain this, but obviously I do here. The gag is in reference to campaign promises by candidates, folks, which applies to ALL politicians, regardless of what party theyāre with.

And who was it that elected a Rassler as Governor?
Dtroutma about 14 years ago
Sheās just channeling H.G. Wells, and some presidential āhistoriansā or ghost writers like for presidents like: āWā, GHW, Harding-a short one, and Harrison -a REALLY short one! Danae might be one wiling to assume command by succession?
Jaroca2 about 14 years ago
mature beyond her years and oh, so wiseā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.;0)
bmonk about 14 years ago
Of course, in practice, Governor Ventura was not a great successāhe didnāt play well with others, nor they with him.
milano99 about 14 years ago
Ah Wiley, you donāt have to explain yourself. Inference on the part of the reader is 90% of the fun. And, for what itās worth, I got it and at 5AM this morning before the first cup of coffee.
lindz.coop Premium Member about 14 years ago
Yep! the 4 billion dollar popularity contest ā such a good use of money, and stick around folks cause weāll do it again in 2 years.
yohannbiimu about 14 years ago
Which election results is Wiley talking about? 2010 or 2008? I mean, Obama got a hell of a lot of gullible folks to vote for 100% hype and lies.
yohannbiimu about 14 years ago
And, when Iām talking about Obama particularly, I mean he was elected on account of what was assumed were his qualifications and abilities, which were non-existent, so it would seem that this comic would have fit more perfectly with that election cycle than this one.
smizzlybob about 14 years ago
The president wrote two autobiographies before he was 30. He should be given credit for the idea in the acknowledgement section, not Mark Twain. And I should get ten percent of the gross for suggesting it.
NightOwl19 about 14 years ago
Oops - see what happens when you use the words āelection resultsā in a comic strip? Not a pretty sightā¦. :)
Last weekend I was talking with someone who spent three years in a different country and then came back to the U.S. He said that the political polarization and negativity in the language used to describe the other party had gotten a lot worse during those three years. Kind of makes you think - are we getting so used to hearing that kind of language that we donāt notice ourselves slipping into the habit of using it ourselves and becoming part of the problem? When youāre in a bad mood, it is a lot of fun to think of the other team as evil. Maybe there are other ways to cope? (Sorry - barely relevant thought-stream overā¦.)
