Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for February 24, 2019

Much ado about the post yesterday about the pulling of Non Sequitur. Some thought it was Go Comics, but it appears to be just a newspaper in Tuscon.

What I want to know is, was Wiley’s “Easter Egg” a mistake or on purpose? I’ve heard both arguments.

And in the meantime, it is equally upsetting that, from the looks of it, only one man is due respect, the very man who has taken disrespect of anybody other than him to unbelievable levels.

And everybody forgets the disrespect the previous president received.

As Brian Carroll of Two Party Opera said, of Obama, “not the president we deserved, but the president we needed.”

She seems to have overlooked the gravity of the situation, would be quite sufficient.

I wonder if she’s pointed at Calvin’s house? Or should I say, pointed at Calvin’s comicstrip?

I think a ski jump would be better suited for you and Lucy rather than the roof of the house.

So, who are the FoTs (Friends of Trump) who are still reading a comic penned by someone who very obviously is not one of their ilk?

Something smells of “outrage for outrage’s sake” from a bunch of non-subscriber COrNflakes.

I could absolutely swear I’ve seen this comic before—and recently, like in the past month! But I can’t find it anywhere. That’s so weird.

I know my anatomy. I trust my guts. It’s my testicles I refuse to follow.

Having always wondered what the diff was between euphemism, metaphor, simile & analogy, just finally looked it up. Was interesting to learn the subtle but very real differences. So now that I’m a annoying smartypants (which BTW is a simile, which is a type of metaphor) I must correct the good cartoonist. The gut would be a metaphor for the subconscious, not a euphemism. The latter is to avoid saying words that are unpleasant, such as saying someone “passed away” instead of “died”.

Non-Sequitur substituted in todays Chicago Tribune. Hopefully not for long.

Also a newspaper in Chattanooga pulled the strip last week…

Sorry but “gut instinct” does not come from the brain. It does, indeed, originate in the gut. Also, your heart has more neurons than your brain and has significantly more impact on what you do and feel than the brain. YW

Re: the censorship – As I’ve said before, this bru-ha-ha is exactly like the old lady who called the cops after being deeply, morally offended because her neighbor was a man who dared to shower but didn’t ever draw the shades in his bathroom. When the officer arrives and asks, “What neighbor? The nearest house is half a mile away!”, the old lady says, “Well, here – just look through these binoculars…” This isn’t kind of a stretch, it’s complete and total crap. It isn’t a strip for kids in the first place and it was nigh on to impossible to read. That said, it’s over, it’s done, and if you still have to slap a hand after all that and need that to feed the ego of yer teeny, little decency league, there are bigger fish to fry. How ‘bout being as least as much morally offended at a world leader who wants to grab’ em by the kitty and would “do her” if she weren’t his own daughter?

The craven, gutless editorial board of The Boston Globe, so-called bastion of quality print journalism in New England, ditched Non-Sequitur in the wake of this overblown non-issue. No doubt that the influence of owner John Henry (Red Sox owner) and the Trump-loving New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft and his minions had much to do with that decision. Coming on the heels of the Boston Globe eviscerating their comics section just a few months ago, I guess this dinosaur print subscriber will be ending my decades-long subscription with the Boston Globe and getting my news elsewhere. To editors everywhere, you don’t keep subscribers by giving in to those extremists who seek to squelch criticism of their political gods…

I’ve lived a long and fruitful life without ever signing on to a site (or wanting to) to make a comment, but the recent event of the “hidden message” has changed my mind. I’ve long enjoyed the wry humor presented in Non Sequitur and the comments on its message. The outrage of dissent being shown by some because some news subscribers decided to drop Wiley is rightly a cause for discussion. The use of a word well known in our lexicon is no longer surprising, but IMO, it’s use should be (well) self regulated. When fighting against the use of hate speech people will say, “Words matter.” They do. I’ve been around long enough to remember that televisions had a 1 on the dial, for those you who remember TV dials. I’ve seen changes in our society. Many times when the change involves the use of offensive actions, or language, it will be excused by some as “pushing the envelope.” To grow, a society does have to push the envelope. To remain a society worthy of growth we have to know when not to shred the contents of that envelope.

Looks like Wiley is recanting his apology in the snow scrawls at the lower left. “I fib.”But that is not nearly as shocking as what I can decipher in the cracks in the snow on the roof!

Not just Tuscon, Birmingham News I know of, and several other papers across the country.

It’s not just Tuscon, here in Charlotte too, this is one of my top three cartoons all time, so I guess I’ll have to go online every day.

Now we know how Wiley feels!

The L.A. Times is also obsessed with Non Sequitur;it’s one of the best.

L.A. Times dropped NS on it’s Mon-Sat page, keeping the Sunday because “these pages are prepared several weeks in advance”. We’ve had two weeks of the same announcement in Wiley’s usual spot. I’m waiting for the replacement (fingers crossed that it’s Breaking Cat News). Or maybe a change of heart (not likely).

You know how totally irrational it is that wars are fought and crimes are committed over something as completely inconsequential as the color of someone’s skin, something literally only skin deep?

What then to make of the insanity surrounding the mere appearance of a simple 4-letter word? Who, anywhere on Earth or in all of recorded history, has been harmed by it? This is like the Rumplestiltskin superstition that words have intrinsic power that can be unleashed by the wizards or shamans who know their secret meanings.

I want this as an Olympic sport, and I want it now!

I probably owe GoComics an apology also—I misunderstood; I thought Go was pulling the strip. So, I’m sorry, GoComics!

My local newspaper blasts this comic daily. They need a new editor.

It depends on how old you are whether you think Danae’s idea might be a good one. ;) Or perhaps, for some, how many beers you just drank.

’Can’t help but believe this strip is a comment on the Democrat field so far….

He really needs to ask more Questions when Danae asks Her Questions.

No matter How frightening Danae’s answers are, he still needs to Know.

go comics decided to sidestep the issue by re-running a previous strip…

Didn’t see this posted thus far; the Chicago Tribune has pulled Wiley as well.Even at $1.50 at the local Menards (home center), they’re off my pick-up Sunday list

~110 out of 700 papers pulled it. Gp Comics just whited out the offending words.

Sadly, it was also pulled from quite a few other newspapers, including the Raleigh News & Observer (NC) and Savannah Morning News (GA). Thank goodness for GoComics!

It was pulled simply because he violated a standing editorial rule and they felt he tried to slip it past them. The fact that he talked about an “Easter egg” on his Twitter belied his claim that he meant to delete it before submitting it. Wiley doesn’t post the comic, his syndicate does. So the sanitized version on GoComics is likely an edit they performed themselves.
