Gee, anyone else remember when people DIDN’T walk around with their faces buried in their phone screens, but actually paid attention to what was around them, like a CURB, or TRAFFIC, or a TELEPHONE POLE, and didn’t walk directly into them? Back when people actually TALKED to each other, and if you wanted to call someone, you had to go in the house to the phone that was ON A CORD? Or, you had to find a pay phone, and put in a dime to make a call?

Or am I the only old geezer that actually remembers this???

Agree with most of the posts. Just because you aren’t a slave to your "smart(?) phone doen’t make you a luddite. I am an electronics engineer with 3 computers and a laptop BUT I have refused to become tied at the hip to cell phones (and yes I have a smart phone which is only used to make phone calls and an occasional text – forced to retire my original MOTO RAZAR when AT&T dropped 2G).

After three text messages, I call the individual to get the information needed. I find it extremely boring reading dumb down news articles on a mobile device. Lastly, even though it’s against the law in nearly all US states to use a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, as a cyclist, I see more people than not texting while driving.

Here’s something to ponder. According to a 2009 Virginia Tech Transportation Institution study, the average time it takes to read a text message is 4.6 seconds. That’s equivalent of time it takes for a vehicle traveling at 55 MPH to cover the distance of a football field, plus the end zones or 80.7 feet per second!

While the study was conducted at highway speeds, the time spent reading a text message is significant, especially in an urban settings. Think about the last time you’ve had to wait at a green light while the driver in front of you, distracted by their phone, hasn’t noticed the light changed from red to green, and you’re stuck for another cycle of traffic lights. In Portland, Oregon it happens a lot, in New York, L.A., Chicago or Detroit the offending driver would get blasted with car horns, that or probably get shot.

The Americans who were here when the Europeans arrived turned out to not have much tolerance / resistance to alcohol. Europeans had had many generations of experience with that, and (some of) the ones who didn’t handle it had been bred out of existence. Nowadays, we’ve invented another thing that’s fun, addictive, cheap enough and bad for us. I wish us luck.

When I was young it was a long stem crank phone with lots of other people on the lines, each with their own coded ring. All could listen in to each other’s phone conversations. First time I heard someone talking to no one apparent walking down the hall by my office I thought they were a nut case.
