Our latest rescue has only three full feet (all four legs) but he loves getting ‘em on the couch.(But we got a dog proof couch cover, not that he’s spoiled.)
I live in the woods, and near many miles of national forest. Over the years we’ve found several dogs that people would take up the dirt mountain roads and abandon them up there. Many are starving to death. I walked up on one that had recently died from what had to be starvation.
We’ve kept some over the years (we have one now). The rest we take home and feed them, then take them to the shelter (they’re not always open when we get back). Some are so scared, that they won’t come to you though. It’s very sad.
On that note, please don’t abandon your dogs! At the very least, take them to a shelter.
The thing about good pets is that you enjoy treating them like royalty. Our cat is a rescue. Objectively, she’s obnoxious, self centered, and has too many pointy places. But we love her.
My rescue cat was abandoned by its Mother here in China and I took him in. In China, you do not abandon pets for they will get picked up and wind up as food at a restaurant or on someones plate at home.
I had sort of a rescue orange Tabby. A woman was going to a nursing home so I took him in. For the first 2 months, he hid under the couch….until one day he came out and turned out to be the most loving, sweet kitty I ever had. Loves to bat around pipe cleaners in mid air and then shove them under doors.
My cat was rescued from under the Garbage Dumpster at a local fast food place where someone had dumped him off when he was about 6 weeks old. Hence his name, “Garby, the Garbage Cat”, and he’s a SWEETIE!!!!
A recent health report stated that owning a dog could lengthen one’s life. Don’t know if the extended report included a cat ownership factor, but will guess it would also be bring benefits, as the company of a cat has been shown to reduce blood pressure and tension.
Favorite comment: Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
My dogs have always been rescues. Right now, sitting next to me and watching me eat, I have my coon hound/pit bull boy that we rescued from a animal hoarding situation and my greyhound/whippet girl who was found wandering near a busy highway with a chemical burn down her back. She was rejected by 3 families before we found her at the shelter.
Over the years I have had three dogs and about a dozen cats, all but one a rescue. (I REALLY wanted that pure bred Siamese.) One of the cats jumped into my SIL’s car in a parking lot. Three of the cats were rescued by my wife and niece after they were left in a dog carrier in the back yard of a house after the owner moved. One of the cats trotted into the electronics workshop where I was employed while we were carrying in a console TV. One was in a box with its mamma in the laundry room of the apartments where I was living with a sign saying “Free, take one”.
I love all the people who rescue animals and give them good homes. I’m not so fond of the cases I’ve seen where rescue agencies essentially foisted off animals on people who were absolutely unable to handle them, such as giving a very large, strong, hyperactive pit mix to a frail couple in their 70’s. If you go the rescue route, pick your agency very carefully. Likewise when giving donations to support a rescue agency.
We vote soon in Texas on Constitutional amendments. You see, our founders wrote far too much in their state Constitution, so we have to use amendments to do a lot of things that other states can do with simple legislation.
This year, Proposition 10 is about law enforcement animals. Presently, they are simply city or county property, and according to the Constitution, local government can only auction, destroy or donate to particular entities their surplus property, which include retiring police animals.
Prop 10 amends the Constitution to have local government let their former handler or other qualified person to adopt them without a fee. It changes disposal to retirement and leaves in place the strong bond that grows between dog or horse and the officer handler.
Rescued a dog that escaped dog-fighters and found a lost kitten in the street ….. thankful every day that we have them. And they thank us, too! A real love fest!!
Yesterday was “Make A Dog’s Day” which emphasizes adopting dogs who aren’t young, attractive, or whole. Puppies get adopted all the time, these dogs usually end up gassed. And God bless those who give these wonderful animals homes.
One thing I’d like to point out is that every penny of all donations to Tails Of Joy goes to animal rescue. There’s no skimming of funds for overhead or anything like that. One very easy way to donate is through smile.amazon.com, where a portion of everything you buy on it is donated. Check it out.
THANKS, WILEY! BTW,my son has four cats and two dogs, our cat was one he found as well. Two of his four cats were found in dumpsters! One cat found him, and after he had it nearly a year, it was riding on his shoulder and the original owner saw him at the coffee shop. Turns out the cat disappeared and she was sick about it. Glad to find it again, and told him to keep her. She had been a winning show cat and breeder, silver Bengal, and valued at about $2,000!!!
Glad to see the House passed anti-cruelty bill, now for the Senate to grow a pair!
This wasn’t exactly a rescue as opposed to the dog determined to be with my sister and her late husband. Kate became of loyal part of the family. Soon after my brother-in-law passed away my sister was having trouble with her property manager. During an disagreement he was about to make a threatening move. He wasn’t worried about Kate because they’d gotten along. Suddenly Kate went after him to his surprise. He’ll never know the favor Kate did for him. My sister isn’t someone to mess with.
My wife and I sat in the center of a large conferance room (I with a handful of hotdogs) at the local animal shelter for 1.5 hours while a 3 year old 70 lb female pit – very afraid of everyone – potential adoptee ran rings around us. Finally her legs gave out and she collapsed by the door. I went over to her, gave her a hotdog and went back to the chair. After about a minute she came over and sat on my feet – female dog for “You’re mine”. She’s rarely been out of my sight (I’m retired) including sleeping in our bed in the three+ years since.
I love all of your stories, they are heartwarming although bittersweet. Our first 2 cats were abandoned at six months old, just before Christmas. Sixteen years later we still have one of them (and a younger one we adopted) They bring joy every day. The wretches who dumped them don’t know what they’re missing.
Easy as pie and worth it. Been donating with smile.amazon.com to the Animal Shelter in Española, NM, where our wonderful dogs have come from for many years.
Wiley, we here at Tails of Joy cannot thank you enough for your support for animal rescue. You always bring awareness and another point of view, and that is what is so needed when saving as many animals as possible. Your generous spirit and kind heart are always evident in your beautiful work, and in your life. Please kiss all your rescued doggies for us, and know that through your art and humor you saved a LOT of homeless dogs today and on into the future! Thank you from all of us.

Every dog or cat without a loving home deserves one. The backstory is for our benefit, not the animals.
