In unrelated news all the dogs in the neighborhood have gone missing.

There are way too many causes to mention in the almost daily loss of actual print news media, but it is sad. We also are losing excellent writers, serious thinkers, and close contact with news of local importance. We are the poorer for that. The depth and width of this tragic path has yet to be defined, but its effects are dampening to those of us who grew up with daily newspapers.

Newspapers try to equate themselves to the 1st Amendment, but cave to the power of the purse.

Talk about burying the lede.

Newspapers quit printing the news and print nothing but they their opinions.

Thank you for mentioning the need for newspapers and journalism. Democracy is indeed dead without it.

It’s like trying to herd cats.

Red over at Red & Rover is having much better luck.

Journalism is changing, at least in my city several good on line only news organizations have sprung up. Most are non-profits with subscriptions like a paid newspaper, but without nearly as many ads. Some have started having community forums as in “Here’s what we’re covering, what else do you want to see?” Also a chance to meet and discuss with reporters and management.

Cancelled my newspaper after 33 years. Not much left in it…. even stopped running Non Sequitor because it was too controversial.

She has a minature horse, and she’s using dogs? I guess Lucy is too smart to be hooked up to that sled.

Re the dying democracy and closing newspapers comment: That’s why New Hampshire is not endorsing a Democrat running for president this election year. The Manchester newspaper no longer has enough editorial staff to interview all the candidates to form enough of an opinion on all of them to form a valid opinion.

Re the squirrels: I have squirrels that sit outside my house and laugh at my Labrador and my terrier mix. They are cruel, evil creatures who enjoy tormenting dogs.

Danae is her own worst enemy.

Ever notice how, even tho Kate always has her nose in a book, she’s the go-to source for info on what’s happening all around her?

Those bemoaning the demise of print newspapers can make a tiny little difference in this medium at least. Down at the bottom of the page is a “My Account” link. You can use it to become a premium member of GoComics for only $15 a year. It’s worth way more than that to me, so I signed up for the automatic-billing plan.

Danae could read the Squirrel Haven sign just as well as anyone else.
