No one has commented that today is the first federal Juneteenth holiday in the US (signed into law on Thursday, 17 June 2021, by President Biden). Also known as Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Emancipation Day, it commemorates the end of slavery in the US and celebrates black culture. The date recognizes June 19, 1865 when some of the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. Juneteenth has been celebrated in various parts of the country since 1866. I personally prefer calling it Jubilee Day because that name best captures the spirit and emotion involved.
