Years ago I found a twenty dollar bill on the floor at work. I sent out an email stating if they can identify the denomination and serial number they can come and claim it.

More than once, someone gave me too much change. I would say “you made a mistake” and the clerk would invariably get defensive… until I said “you gave me too much.”

My wife has gone back into Walmart with the same issue before and received the same response

Brutus may be lacking in a few areas, but honesty isn’t one of them.

I once got an extra $5 at an ATM and when I took the time to walk into the bank to give it back, I was looked at like I was wasting their time.

Now his food is cold.

We were shopping at an A&P in Maryland when I was a kid. My dad bought a case of chicken. When he left regular he noticed that woman gave him $20 too much. He went back to her and said you made a mistake,gave me too much change. She said I don’t make mistakes. Dad said thanks and kept $20 .

Won’t her register be unbalanced and she will have to add in the $5 from her own pocket? He should try a little harder to return it. If she still insists, then he should keep it. Or tip her with it.

He may be a Born Loser but his honesty makes Brutus a winner in my eyes. He just went out of his way to show her grace and she refused it. Some of us see a Biblical analogue there…

Honest to the core that man. No one would have gotten back in the car line to return the money…..

I can only remember one incident of getting too much change. It was a burger place and it was $10 too much. The girl at the counter that made the mistake was very grateful because she would have had that docked from her pay.

Same thing happened to me in a bank once. When I tried to straighten it out I got all the way up to the acting Bank Manger and he told me to keep it.

McDoggies screwed me out of Ten Dollars. I gave them a Twenty and they insisted I gave them a Ten. I know it was a twenty because I checked my billfold to see if I needed to go to the ATM. I haven’t done business with them for about five years. They lost far more than the ten dollars they stole from me.

Isn’t he supposed to be a born loser?

A phone booth once accidentally gave me over seven dollars in change. I was living under an Honor Code at a military academy. It took five minutes to convince an operator that I wanted to give the money back. She patiently waited as I deposited the money coin-by-coin back into the phone. She had to manually perform some operation after each coin, so the phone would not think I was making a call.

This will probably bug him the rest of the day, he’s not use to this good fortune.

I made that mistake years ago. I tried to tell a bank teller that they had given me the wrong change and she insisted that she didn’t make mistakes. I told her thanks for the extra $40 and drove away. I could see her running after me in the rearview mirror, but I didn’t stop.

Happened to me once at a them park when I was trying to win a stuffed animal. She gave me back $10.00 extra change and then looked at me like I had 2 heads when I tried to return it. I did the same thing Brutus did!

Good for you, Brutus. Now that she has explained why she doesn’t want it.

Thanks Chip, a great customer relations story, really tight, amusing kicker, but, sadly we all know Brutus will never keep that five dollars, don’t we…

And if it had been the other way around, there is still something that can be done. Although I wouldn’t handle it there at the window. When I worked at a supermarket, a lady came and said I shorted her $5. Easy solution. A manager just came and counted my drawer. She was right. My drawer had an extra $5 in it.

Many years ago my boyfriend at the time and I went to a McDonald’s drive-thru and ordered food, paid with cash, got our change while the manager (who was working the register that day) was very chatty with us so we weren’t paying attention to what he gave us. He was a super nice guy but seemed a bit wired, tbh. We got home and realized he not only gave us our correct change, but one of the bills happened to be the one we gave him (think it was a $20 or something). So we got “free” food plus the change for the bill he gave back to us. We felt bad but didn’t know what to do by that point. Being broke college kids, we just shrugged and enjoyed our good fortune that day. I’m sure had we driven all the way back we may have been given the same spiel about the transaction being closed or something. No idea. This was back in the late 90’s so who knows.

Bazinga, Brutus. Honesty does have its rewards, and this time it paid you $5.

Good on you Brutus. I’ll remember that one. Especially if I have been short changed, better to say what you said rather than argue about it.
