Green is a great color! It happens to be the same as money.

We are lucky that most weeds are also green.

I gave up and xeriscaped.

Old farmers learn 2 things, plow around the rock and only worry about one side of the fence (unless you own both sides). In 2024 texters have it shortened to, “U do U”. lol

If Brutus ever took an interest in his lawn I think Wilberforce and Hurricane Hattie would be in the front yard, blowing on dandelions when he got home from work.

Looks good from a distance

Like Brutus, I’ve been settling for just green in the yard. My hedges have all but taken over the front yard, though the grass is cut back thanks to the old lawn tractor. And the backyard is a jungle. And I’m beginning to like jungle living. Cue Tarzan yell.

In another life, when I was a judge, a man was up for violating the city ordinance against “weeds and tell grass.” I ended up striking down the ordinance, pointing out that they had not defined “weed”, so we had to fall back on Webster’s which said a weed was “an unwanted plant.” The stuff he had in his yard was stuff he wanted, therefor, not weeds. Also the tall grass part, because they had not said how tall was tall. You can’t have a law written so that no one can tell if they’re in violation.

Science needs to find a way to keep grass green and growing like unwanted weeds. Weeds thrive while grass browns and dies in dry heat unless you water – then weeds grow abundantly.

We got close to 0.3 inches/7.6mm of rain. The weeds are doing much better now.

I’m with the loser. Monsanto lawns are an insult to nature and all that’s good and worthy in this world! Just say no to poisoning nature! If it’s green and survives being mowed to 3 inches, it’s lawn!

cut it short enough or often enough and you can’t tell the weeds from the grass

Me too Brutus. I think the weedless yards are a waste of time.

The secret to a great yard is: 1) Move to Arizona. 2) Have nothing but gravel in your yard. 3) Apply a liberal undiluted dose of Ortho Ground Clear to the gravel once a year. Weeds be gone, and yardwork be gone – forever.

Given the cost of water in Edmonton, I’m leaning to liking brown a lot.

I’m with Brutus (again). I cut the grass. That’s it. My wife wants to water it and I tell her that only increases my work. I did invest in a new electric lawn mower which actually makes it kinda fun. I’m sure the shiny new toy factor will wear off soon. But I put my tunes on and enjoy a walk in the sunshine until it gets like it is now with heat and humidity.

I prefer natural flora, less work.

You mean a lawn should have some grass too?

While our lawn is looking good our next door neighbor just lets his yard grow wild. One of these days his kids will get lost in the high grass

Yep… my method: if it’s green, mow it.

sounds like brutus has adopted our neighbors’ approach. he used to cut the weeds every once in a while, but after i gently admonished him for getting over-ambitious (very out of character for him) and cutting day lilies in our yard, he stopped going out in the yard at all, never mind cutting the weeds. i didn’t mean to scare him. on the bright side, the knotweed jungle forms a nice privacy barrier…

I would like to know who came up with the idea of a perfect lawn with only grass on it, that requires regular watering and mowing? The stuff is so fragile. It’s supposed to go brown for a month or so every summer. That’s normal for grass. No, we have to spend hundreds of dollars to keep it watered and unnaturally green with ever-changing chemicals. Why?

Me too, if it’s green and hides the dirt, mow it.
