I drew a blank on this one. Evidently, one would have to be familiar with the obscure Clifford and red coat references which I am not. Two thumbs down!
Count me as one who had no idea what this was about. I read the comment about it being a book or show or something for kids. Since I don’t have one of those, I can’t relate to things like this. The same goes for references to comic books and those movies about them. I have zero interest in them. Therefore, I appreciate it when people explain strips like these.

I don’t get it. Is Clifford the previous store owner?

There used to be a steakhouse called “The Blue Ox.”
I think the owner’s name was Paul something or other…

Burns: Some men hunt for sport,
Others hunt for food,
The only thing I’m hunting for,
Is an outfit that looks good…
See my vest, see my vest,
Made from real gorilla chest,
Feel this sweater, there’s no better,
Than authentic Irish setter.
See this hat, ’twas my cat,
My evening wear – vampire bat,
These white slippers are albino
African endangered rhino.
Grizzly bear underwear,
Turtles’ necks, I’ve got my share,
Beret of poodle, on my noodle
It shall rest,
Try my red robin suit,
It comes one breast or two,
See my vest, see my vest,
See my vest.
Like my loafers? Former gophers -
It was that or skin my chauffeurs,
But a greyhound fur tuxedo
Would be best,So let’s prepare these dogs,
(Kill two for matching clogs,)
See my vest, see my vest,
See my vest

Big red? I would think more of an elephant when I think big red. The elephant whose outfit was stolen by a big blue donkey!

I guess Emily had to come up with some way to afford a sizable burial plot with a sensible funeral.

Emily fed Clifford that dog food that’s supposed to give your pet a nice shiny coat.

</ sarcasm > When comics refer to books, maybe they ought to print the name in the last frame, to avert confusion. 8^S

I’d never heard of Big Red the dog either. But Big Red sounds like a dog’s name, although it could have been a horse. Do horses shed?
