An old employer of mine was Lebanese and survived their civil war. I once asked him why so many Middle Eastern people smoke. He told me “Two things: One, because when your biggest worry is getting shot you don’t much worry about cancer, and two, because a civil war is brother against brother, neighbour against neighbour, so during the breaks in shooting at each other we’d all sit down and have a smoke together”.
