Later, in front of the fire, Ludwig relates how he had the snow bunny right in his sights… and then the big guy in the house rattled the vittles box and scared it off!
“If man could be crossed with the cat,” Mark Twain once wrote, “it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." Twain owned up to 19 cats at one time, writes Livius Drusus for Mental Floss, “all of whom he loved and respected far beyond whatever he may have felt about people.
I’m glad I live where I occasionally do see Canadian Lynx and Snowshoe Hare. I see hare tracks everyday when walking my dog….but with all the snow here in northernmost Maine, I seldom see them moving around.
Reminds me of Snoopy’s fantasy sequences. “Here’s the elusive Canada lynx, skillfully stalking its exclusive prey, the snowshoe hare, through the snow.” Then Charlie Brown, holding Snoopy’s supper dish, comes out and says Arlo’s line.
We have two cats and we live in the country. The little one takes care of the mice, the big one takes care of the chipmunks. Last year, the big one nailed 14 chipmunks. I think he’s still up by 2
My dad always told me not to “get mixed up” with a man who didn’t like cats, because they would probably always want their own way. “You can’t boss a cat around the way you can a dog, he’ll expect to be able to boss you around, as well.”
Don’t know if it’s exactly true, but I didn’t try to find out. I did understand that I like cats well enough that is I wasn’t allowed to have one, I’d be unhappy and resentful, which is no basis for a marriage.
For those who dislike pets keep this in mind. When everyone else has left you, your pets are still there. Your dog will never be disloyal, never stab you in the back, never lie about you, never steal from you, will always welcome you home, will never get tired of the same stupid jokes, will always snuggle on the couch. I cannot say the same for humans. Granted, there are exceptions, BUT all dogs and cats are born gentle and loving. They have to be taught to be mean by cruel humans.
I have a pair of Great Horned Owls nesting in the neighbors pine. Pretty sure first egg was laid yesterday. Yesterday dusk she went straight from roost tree in my yard to the nest tree. Lots of hooting and squawking after. Now that’s nature entertaining at her best!

I’ll tolerate a cat if it’s a mouser, ala Luddie, but bumper stickers referring to four pawed grandkids are depressing.

Luddie’s daydreams? We had a cat who loved the treats; the new cat hates ’em.

The lynx’s acute hearing allows him to home in on food sources.
