Arlo really should know better than to play mind games with his better half.

    It’s not a woman-cave. It’s a she-shed.

I would love that. I do have a room I can retreat to as does my husband so I can’t complain. But to have a reading room of my own, that would be so heavenly.

Isn’t an ideal woman-cave an enormous walk-in closet?

She likes gardening, perhaps it should be a ‘she shed’.

Seems like just another way to spend more time apart to me. I enjoy being with my wife and listening to our favorite music, each reading our books or just watching TV

LOL! After decades of giving into my wife’s sense of decor and styles in every room of the house, I’m taking back my study/office! Dumping decades of dust collecting brick-a-brack, and claiming a space where Jazz and Opera are safe from the monotony of pop noise. Where a man can still enjoy a pipe or cigar and a brandy after dinner…

In the last century, men had a “study” where they spent their free time. Now they retreat to a “cave”. Is this an improvement?

My man cafe lacks a TV, recliner, refrigerator, and kitchen. It has a drill press, radial arm saw, table saw, router table, belt sander, three or four electric hand saws, drills, and blowers, and two walls of manual hand tools.

We both did that after the last kid left the house. We converted our 3 bedroom to 1 bedroom. One bedroom is my wife’s cave (hobby, sewing, TV, computer, etc.) and one bedroom is my man cave. (library, tv, Murphy bed [just in case we have a visitor] and my computer.) The wine rack and Yuengling Kegerator are in the dining room so we can share. The rule we sent to the kids was "you can visit for a week, beyond that, get a hotel room.) It has been over 20 years and it has worked out great. Of course, it helps that my kids are decent, hard working, adults and not spoiled brats waiting to return home and suck off of us).

We all know what’s going to happen. She’s going to set up the guest room with a big book case and a comfy couch so she can listen to music and read and he’s going to get lonely and go in there to hang out.

Or else she is going to get a fantastic gardening shed with a potting table, a comfy chair and some shelves for gardening books & magazines. A water tap and sink, and some outlets and overhead lighting.

I hate the term “she shed,” the fact that the dominate “private space” narrative is that a man needs and deserves a private place away from his family while a woman who wants the same should go outside of the house into a shed. I mean… a SHED. It’s weird. It’s very weird. I dislike the term “man cave” too. It’s a study or a sitting room. Why gender it?

A “She Shed” is in the back yard. A “Lady Lair” is in the house. So says David Bromstad.

Husband has the garage as his woodworking shop. He has the work half of the basement – other than the washer and dryer area, as more of his work space. We have half the basement finished – he has his leatherworking and mat cutting shop in there . We share the middle bedroom as office space. We share the “family room” off the kitchen as our craft studio – but since the start of Covid my side of the room – including my work table – has become our space to store spare food. He took over the living room in April 2022 when he bought a small, big screen TV for his birthday. He spend sometime decorating the room originally as 18th century(ish) and I could not have things out of the period in the room – but now it has a large parson’s type table over the “blanket chest” (actually the front pulls down instead of the top lifting and it has drawers in it to store his DVDs) because he wanted it – it is used for “Friday night midnight movie on TV”, “Saturday date night movie on TV” by both of us and “Sunday afternoon James Bond festival” by him. (I cannot really watch the big TV hurts my eyes and it is too loud so I watch the movies with antiglare glasses on and shooting earplugs in my ears.)

I do have 1/3 of the office for my work and personal use. I also have the smallest bedroom (not the closet – that is his for his out of season clothing I only have my one very small closet with the floor that rises up an angle through it in the bedroom – he has two closets with this one ) to keep my teddy bear collection in.
