Mark Twain’s adult home is a museum in Hartford, CT. It was a frequent field trip destination growing up nearby. There are many tributes to cats there including some cat shaped tiles around the fireplace and many statues. He had up to 19 cats at a time and when he traveled abroad, would “rent” cats for the time of his visit.
Apparently “slave of the lash” refers to social (alcoholic) drinking. So while it’s probably true that a cat would not become one, why not include most other animals?
Cats are the only non-herd, non-flock, and non-pack animal ever domesticated. And there’s some question about how domesticated they are. Twain is also quoted as saying that all people are descended from apes, except red-heads, and they are descended from cats. (His hair was red before it was white.)
I’ve had both and loved them dearly, but cats are my heart. Yes, dogs are more immediately attached to you, come when called and act like a happy child around you. Cats however , generally want to know who you are before they give their love to you, and when they do, it’s more like a teenager who thinks you are cool and wants to hang with you.
A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. It is the crucial test. None but the humane treat a cat well. – Mark Twain
We have a menagerie, 4 dogs and 2 cats. They all know when it’s dinner time and line up. They have an innate sense of time, that unfortunately, most humans have failed to master.
I had a cat who very much acted like a dog. Was trained to sit, stay, fetch and came when called. He greet me when I came home with a big meow and followed me all around the house.

I know JJ is a Cat Person but I grew up with a dog. Saddest day of my Father’s life was when we had to say goodbye to Smokey.

I don’t like Arlo’s creepy side-eye breaking the fourth wall.

Unless those treats have a Brand Name of “Lash”, that quote doesn’t correlate to what Arlo said… ☺

Oh, you can get a cat to wear a leash. But if you’re going to do that, you might as well get a small dog.

My cats don’t understand “No!” or “Get off there!” but if you say “Tuna” or “Is anybody hungry? Want some food?” they have no problem understanding.

So many creatures (people) are slaves of the “treat.” “Name your poison.”

No cats, no dogs – plenty of teddy and other bears here.
