A good friend of mine throws left handed but is right handed for everything else. He objects to being called ambidextrous, insisting he’s just right-handed. We were on the water polo team together in high school and he could throw with power as a lefty. Odd.
Look up ‘mixed handedness.’ Those are people who use different hands depending on the task they are doing. Only a very small percentage of people are truly ambidextrous.
Mixed handedness is often the result of people being ‘switched’ when they were children. I was naturally left-handed, but my mom kept putting my spoons and forks into my right hand, and back then, the school I went to frowned on kids writing left-handed. In hindsight, no wonder I was terrible at handwriting. Didn’t know I was left handed until I took archery in 7th grade.
My left handed brother-in-law does a lot of things right handed because when he went to Catholic School the nuns forced him to be right handed. Later, his speech therapist said that’s why he stutters.
I can do more left handed than most. I attribute that to my father being left handed. Sometimes I switch hands to write on the board at school when I’m teaching, (either hand is terrible penmanship which I also attribute to my father). If the kids notice, I tell them I’m amphibious. ;)
I was raised right-handed. One time, a few years ago, I was at a Ladies Bible Group & we all had to draw a picture with our non-dominant hand. All of the ladies thought that I didn’t follow the directions.
Now that the Election is over – let’s get the COMMENTS back on political strips. I suggest users here start contacting Go Comics through the “contact” us for under the “Feedback/Suggestions” subject.
I used to play tennis. Instead of backhands, I would just switch hands. Got into trouble for that… No, I am not ambidextrous, either. Some things are strictly right, some left, and the rest I can’t do with either hand, or foot.
A late colleague of mine always said he was left handed for throwing, voting, and something else I can’t remember, and right handed for everything else.
Whenever somebody offers me a rake or shovel to help with a chore, always tell them that is a left-handed tool, and I’m right-handed. First, they agree for a moment, then they smile.
I tend switch out which hand I use when my muscles get tired, but I’m still left-handed. My hypothesis is that if you’re not actually ambidextrous, that habit is more likely to develop in lefties because you are generally forced to use you right hand for certain tasks, making your right hand more coordinated than righties’ left hands. That causes your right hand to be more readily available to fill in for your left.

It’s not a matter of handedness, it’s a matter of her hands being too small to hold that ball with her knuckles.

Why bother, the kid wouldn’t understand anyway.

It is true that most politicians are ambidextrous. They are able to talk out of both sides of their mouth equally well.

My kids’ dad was left handed for some things, ambidextrous for sports and hunting.

One of my brothers is lefthanded, but because the rest of us boys were righted and had righted gloves, learned to throw right handed but batted left.

Milton Berle described Kermit The Frog as “An amphibious Master of Ceremonies. That means he’s dull on both land AND water!”

Been nice if I could be both ways. I came upon a woman working that way, write with one hand and 10 key other hand, I told her I admired her.

Being able to think and throw more than one way is obviously not politically correct.
(The term “politically correct” is also not politically correct… I do so declare.)
