In a sea of comics that either ignore this most holiest of days, or poke fun at it, you can always trust B.C. to remember. I do miss Willey’s poem though.
For years our church had what we called “Son Rose” services on Easter. Unfortunately, this is New England, and it was held outside, so it wasn’t very popular. I loved it, and miss it. Side note: this year, I get to do one of the readings at church.
Jesus came to Earth in the form of a servant. The four Gospels all show this, with the best known example being the time he washed the feet of His disciples. In those days, that was done by slaves, which was why Peter initially objected to Jesus doing this.
No, we are not supposed to serve him. His earthly ministry was about serving others, treating each other decently, forgiveness, not condemning one another, patience and long suffering. His life was to show us a better way of doing life. Contemporary Christianity has turned His life into an obsession with sin and evangelism – culminating in a ‘get out of hell free card,’ provided you have done everything every nut-case evangelist has told you to do. Grace was all free from the start – we are required to do nothing, HE did it all, that is what GRACE means.
Our local newspaper stopped running BC for a similar strip years ago. It had to do with the Jewish people and Passover. Some people were offended. Another case of the minority ruining it for the majority. I heard the paper’s subscriptions dropped after that incident (dropping BC).
Thanks guys for all the nice replies, sometimes when you say things like I did earlier people get hold of the wrong end of the stick, good to know there’s a bunch of nice people out there irrespective of beliefs. Hope you all had a great sunny peaceful day. Spring is well on it’s way and the world is launching back into life after long sleep (um… northern hemisphere anyway ;-))
And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it..-Matthew 28:2
“no, you’re supposed to listen to his words and try to follow them – but Capitalist Christians have forgotten that.”~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I am not a Capitalist and I am not a Christian.I have only one guide I try to live by:
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. That seems to be the only rule we really need..I am an atheist..
The date may not have been appropriated, but the name was. The Easter bunny also is probably derived from fertility rituals. I do however love it went this strip touches o Christianity.
The word “Easter” does not appear in the Bible. It comes from the northern European fertility goddess whose name also gives us the term “estrogen” and “estrus” — terms of fertility.
Eggs and rabbits (bunnies) are also fertility symbols.
Easter was a Pagan spring fertility celebration. It was originally the vernal equinox (first day of spring).
They later made it the first full moon after the vernal equinox so they could party in the moonlight.
When the Christians co-opted the PAGAN HOLIDAY, they made it on Sunday, and that is still the modern formula for Easter:First Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.
@DDWiz“When the Christians co-opted the PAGAN HOLIDAY, they made it on Sunday, and that is still the modern formula for Easter:First Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. It is a PAGAN holiday.”.Yes, but the Roman Catholic Church engulfed many pagan practices and beliefs like a giant amoeba..Properly, we would always celebrate — or at least remember — on the Sunday after Passover.
Nice tribute to Johnny. While I don’t much care for those who use(d) their strips to beat me over the head with their beliefs, you always knew the come Christmas and Easter Johnny was going to have a tasteful comment on Christ and if you didn’t like it you could just skip those days.

“And … here comes the religious debate.”
It always is with the posters about the strip’s late creator. Bunch of ingrates! (Well, not all of them)

A human sacrifice myth.God sacrifices his own son, who is really himself, to himself to make other people’s sins disappear.
Jesus died for your sins!Jesus lives! (He didn’t really die, or at least stay dead).
