Years ago, driving south from Calgary, there was a series of signs, ever more insistent, that you should stop at “The Tap” for a drink of “the best water in Alberta.”

Finally, after many a mile, we came upon THE TAP, merely a pull-off parking area where a pipe stuck out of the ground, with a regular garden tap on the end. The water was so stinky and heavily laden with minerals as to be virtually undrinkable.

I once saw a sign stating a weight limit for a bridge… about half-way across the bridge.

I’m curious to know where they get all the logs to hold up the stone signposts when you don’t see any trees or even a single blade of grass growing anywhere in B.C.?

In my town, the recently put in stop signs with solar powered led lights.

The streets are still a patchwork of potholes and cold asphalt patch.

    And the sign said

    “Long-haired freaky people

    Need not apply"

So I tucked my hair up under my hat

And I went in to ask him why

He said, "You look like a fine upstandin’ young man

    I think you’ll do"

So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that

    Huh, me workin’ for you"

    Whoa

    Sign, sign

    Everywhere a sign

    Blockin’ out the scenery

    Breakin’ my mind

    Do this, don’t do that

    Can’t you read the sign?

    And the sign said

    “Anybody caught trespassin’

    Will be shot on sight"

So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house

“Hey! What gives you the right

To put up a fence to keep me out

But to keep Mother Nature in?

If God was here, he’d tell you to your face

‘Man, you’re some kind of sinner’"

    Sign, sign

    Everywhere a sign

    Blockin’ out the scenery

    Breakin’ my mind

    Do this, don’t do that

    Can’t you read the sign?

Now, hey you, mister, can’t you read?

You got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat

You can’t even watch, no, you can’t eat

You ain’t supposed to be here

The sign said, "You’ve got to have a membership card

    To get inside"

    Uh

    And the sign said

    “Everybody welcome

Come in, kneel down and pray"

But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all

    I didn’t have a penny to pay

So I got me a pen and a paper

And I made up my own little sign

I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin’ ’bout me

    I’m alive and doin’ fine"

    Woo!

    Sign, sign

    Everywhere a sign

    Blockin’ out the scenery

    Breakin’ my mind

    Do this, don’t do that

    Can’t you read the sign?

    Sign, sign

    Everywhere a sign

    Sign

One of my favorite signs are the ones warning you of the “Rough Road” they have no plans on repairing anytime soon.

Another favorite is a local sign stating:

    YOUR GPS IS WRONG!

    NO TRUCK TRAFFIC

Of course the ones that ignore it usually find themselves in trouble as soon as they get to the railway crossing that they can’t get over with a tractor trailer.

BTW there is a sign warning them of not going that way in the first place, but yup, you always have people that think they are being smarter than everyone else.

Have to say, it’s fun watching them try to turn around or back out of the situation they put themselves in.

That is just like NY State several years ago when then Governor Andrew Cuomo spent millions of dollars of federal highway funds putting up unauthorized promotional signs without bothering to get federal approval first. Because of his friends in Washington, D.C., he basically got away with it. Eventually the state spent millions more to remove or modify the offending signs.

As a retired highway sign maker, I find this far too accurate. There is a tendency to overdo things. At least in our state there’s a dedicated highway fund to keep up the roads. We don’t have to wait until the politicians are up for reelection do get funds.
