it’s a strong spirit that is rumoured to give hallucinations, though the minute quantities of hallucigen found in one of it’s ingredients is less likely to be the cause, than the high alcohol content, between 90-148 proof (for those in the US.). in otherwords, john got plastered and found himself missing a shell, and had to use a replacement.

Drinking liquor can help some people to come out of their shells.

Drinking liquor can help some turtles to not only come out of their shells, but can cause them to lose their shells completely.

One of Edgar Allan Poe’s favorite drinking buddies was a fellow poet (His epitaph reads “Here Sleeps a Poet”),named Henry Beck Hirst (1813-74). His favorite libation was absinthe.Apart from his association with Poe, Hirst is best known for his epic poem “The Coming of the Mammoth”. It’s about an ancient Native American tribe that hunts down a man eating (!) mammoth across the North American continent. Even Poe called it “preposterous”.Do you think that absinthe might have had something to do with it?

My first thought was John was making a reference to getting ‘pickled’, but I don’t think that’s quite right.

The actual answer to the question is that John doesn’t know what happened to his shell. The night is a mystery to him.

Yes, yes I have. The rocks in my inner ear took a month to recover and I had just half a thimble. Loved the taste, had to pause before moving my head so objects wouldn’t move for a month.

It’s only good for gunshot wounds. Turtle is too literal about the Beer Barrel Polka, and Ski’s south side Milwaukee tavern down by Schuster’s, or Saz’s where the train turns the corner around.
