One of Edgar Allan Poeâs favorite drinking buddies was a fellow poet (His epitaph reads âHere Sleeps a Poetâ),named Henry Beck Hirst (1813-74). His favorite libation was absinthe.Apart from his association with Poe, Hirst is best known for his epic poem âThe Coming of the Mammothâ. Itâs about an ancient Native American tribe that hunts down a man eating (!) mammoth across the North American continent. Even Poe called it âpreposterousâ.Do you think that absinthe might have had something to do with it?
Yes, yes I have. The rocks in my inner ear took a month to recover and I had just half a thimble. Loved the taste, had to pause before moving my head so objects wouldnât move for a month.

Drinking liquor can help some people to come out of their shells.
Drinking liquor can help some turtles to not only come out of their shells, but can cause them to lose their shells completely.
