They’ll need to use up a few of their nine lives to survive this. If I were less of an irrepressible optimist, I’d be making dire predictions.

It’s the sacred duty of a free press to speak truth to power. Lay out the people’s grievances and demand they be redressed!

It’s right there in the Catstitution, you know.

In the inevitable comic rock opera based on BCN, I imagine No Kibble in the Cupboard as a trio recitative in act one.

Maybe Kibble for All as the ensemble finale for the full multi-species cast?

This is spooky — I have an automatic feeder, and just this morning the hopper was empty (No kibble in the cupboard, either, but that’s because I hadn’t put put away yet.)

“Let’s just say I’m going to get the ball rolling. I have watched this horror for a long time hoping humans would simply grow out of it. They haven’t. I don’t think they ever will, on their own. And make no mistake, I have no illusions that I can reverse this overnight. But by Nike’s sandals I have to do something.” Megan was now tapping her front claws on the tabletop. “Let’s get back to the deli- I have some more research I need to do. And planning. A lot of planning…”

Poor Elvis is starving after all the riotous activity yesterday. However, Lupin did eat a lot of popcorn so he may have a little more fortitude in the face of this dire crisis.

Perhaps the people have jumped onto a new bandwagon. Hide your cats’ food around the house and let them go find it on their own. Check out this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/24/business/a-healthier-way-to-feed-your-cat-hide-its-meals.html

Good morning and happy Monday/Funday, orbsters and orbabies. I see a crisis in the making. For the BCN musical, I also hear the song “Food, food, food”, sung to the tune of “Spam, Spam, Spam” (Monty Python).

On a more personal note, I am moderately miffed today. Paul and I bought a new printer for me last week and I decided to set it up yesterday. Well, 3 hours later, after following all the troubleshooting steps the manufacturer suggested, the blasted thing still insists on telling me there is a paper jam, even when there is no paper in it. So, it’s hop in a cab and back to the store today to exchange it. Grrr….

I leave kibble out all the time for my cats and the dog. However, Dog has to take medicine so I mix kibble, gushy and his medicine in the morning. Cats have figured this out so now they have taken to waking me up and sitting by the dog’s bowl. So cute I have to give them some gushy stuff as well.

Maybe Elvis could find an edible plant or two to tide him over for the time being. Well, for the few seconds any greenery stays in his tum before he demonstrates the throwing of the up.

The only dish our elderly tuxedo will eat out of is a shallow ashtray with sloped sides. The only kibble our calico isn’t allergic to only comes in small bags, and the store never has more than one on the shelf. Add to that a 15 pound siamese and a white fluffball with a voracious appetite, and we are constantly out of food in either the dish or the bag.

    Progress Report

2 days and so very much to say. The kittens are coming along just great. The trick here is to go in and visit literally 9 or 10 times a day and spend at least a few minutes with each kitten. We can now scoop them up with absolutely no fuss. Ginger still gives a little tiny hiss as you reach for him/her (no, I haven’t checked yet. In this #metoo climate I’m afraid it may be taken wrong.) but settles right down.

Give them rubbies and speak softly. With the respiratory thing going on they each get a warm washcloth face cleaning to remove the schmutz. Last night I actually got Ginger to roll over a little for a belly rub. There was 15 seconds of actual playing and rabbit kicking before realization dawned that I was not a kitten.

The Vet agreed that since all 3 show the same symptoms we will bring in Bandit who is the most seriously wheezy. She will prescribe for all 3 and we will begin treatments as soon as we get home again. Also bringing in a stool sample. Might as well do it now. Elvis and Lupin were worm free, flea free and otherwise parasite free. We are hoping the same will be true for this crew. So far nothing but a few ticks. Very normal for our woodsy setting.

BTW, the little tortie has begun purring now and then for no apparent reason. With Mom, not us.

Now for the HUGE progress. Trixie had not been using the box, even with attractants. This was very disturbing because regardless of any changes in feralocity, (yes, it’s a word. I used it, didn’t I?) we cannot keep an indoor puss who thinks the world is a bathroom. She was peeing in a general area in the bathroom, so last night Lisa placed a litter box there. Big sigh of relief. She used it. Hallelujah.

But wait, there’s more. Everyone likes to wedge in behind the toilet. It is the most “secure” location in the room. We scoop the kittens out with no fuss but have not done the same with Trixie. A little gentle prodding from behind to push her out so we can do a bit more maintenance.

Saturday night I was able to give her an extensive combing with a Furminator type undercoat brush. She tolerated it extremely well and the result is a much less scruffy kitty. Smooth and almost silky. I also gave her a washcloth bath. Just a warm damp cloth run down the body as if you were petting.

Last night Lisa tried to pull Trixie out for a lap session. Nothing doing. She didn’t get crazy but she did twist away and give Lisa a little nip. Didn’t break the skin, which was almost certainly deliberate restraint.

A little while later we discussed it and decided that she would try again, with no hesitancy, no nervousness.Just a gentle 2 handed scoop.

Success! Trixie stretched out on Lisa’s lap on a towel (Trixie does a bladder release if stressed and held in place. No struggling, no hissing or growling, no pissing (for which Lisa was grateful). Spent 10 minutes like that, gradually relaxing, a micrometer at a time. Gentle voice, full body gentle petting and stroking. Ear skritchies and all the rest.

After a bit she lay there with no restraint, not even a gentle still hand. She finally decided that enough was enough and gently backed/slunk off Lisa’s lap. But stopped within a foot and stretched out. Not terribly happy but not upset.

Will report later with medical details.

A day or two ago, someone asked about my photo of our yin/yang kitties, so I changed my avatar. Not exactly the yin/yang symbol but pretty darn cute. Biggest problem was getting a shot with eyes open on the part of both. I have now a pile of photos of one cat with eyes open and the other with eyes shut. The black cat has yellow eyes and a sprinkling of white chest hair and the white cat has green eyes with pink nose, ears and toe beans. I must confess I have been known to address them as Puck and Lupin but they are Val and Olaf.

Off Topic from Georgia (Facebook at BCN Website) Georgia Dunn – Breaking Cat NewsFor people who enjoy hearing about this sort of thing, the Big Pink House in BCN is heavily based on two real houses in Ashaway, Rhode Island. (…With a few extra windows and flourishes added in). One of the houses is the actual real life Big Pink House, where our family lived in the early days of BCN. We rented an apartment on the third floor, what was believed to be either the old servants quarters or the former attic. I grew up loving that old house, and having the chance to live in one of its apartments was delightful. Pretty quickly the house worked its way into the comic as the setting, and I’m happy for it now. The second house is one of Tommy’s Woman’s dream houses growing up, that she liked to point out and praise whenever she was visiting. While these real houses are in Ashaway, RI, I’ve set the comic next door in Hope Valley, RI. I lived there after college, and that’s where I was when the Man and I began dating. It’s also where one of the characters you’ll meet later in the strip owns a flower shop in real life! It was a way to sort of weave one more personal element into the comic. The house from one town we lived in, picked up and moved over to another town we lived in. I love both places dearly.

I hope everyone is having a great Monday!

ONYX UPDATE: Crunchyf00dz & gushyf00dz are disappearing & lumps are appearing in the catbox overnight, but she’s still in hiding during the day & sis has no idea where. Sis has installed a baby gate across the top of the stairs to the basement to block off access (there’s no door) but won’t be able to do that until she’s sure Onyx is upstairs. Stay tuned…
