I don’t agree that fictional characters should be taken as a source of inspiration. Fictional characters are fake heroes who are always protected by the pen that writes them. Everything about them is conveniently concocted. Stealing Robin’s lines, if they inspire us, we are certainly doomed.

Of course fictional characters can be inspiring. Remember Neil Gaiman’s paraphrase of G.K. Chesterton: “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

I’m having a flashback to last year’s Independence Week comics with Pucky and Po-ta-to Salad. :-)

Good morning everyone,YOU SHALL NOT PASS these are my potatoes.

Uh oh. When they start saying “I know,” it’s just a matter of time before they’re cheating on you. … if they haven’t already.

Pucky’s Potato Salad. Here is yesterday’s Face book post from Georgia. She emphasizes that it is safe for cats and yes, Puck adores it. “A lot of folks have expressed surprise that a cat would desire potato salad. Well, 1. Puck LOVES People-food. He has eaten corn off the cob before! And 2. Our potato salad is full with BACON! This is my potato salad recipe—It’s cat friendly, and people tested. And if you hate mayo, you’re in luck, because I do too (SOLIDARITY!) and this recipe calls for NONE OF IT! Lol!Loaded Baked Potato Salad:3 Large Russet Baked Potatoes16 oz (or so) sour cream2-3 tb milk (or so… I eyeball a lot)Pepper, salt3/4 of a Hormel “Real” Bacon Bits 3oz bottle1-1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar, with some extra for topping1. Prepare baked potatoes (Rad recipe for baked potatoes: Stab each potato all over with a fork. Place on foiled pan/cookie tin. Roast plain at 450 for 25 minutes. Brush all over with olive oil. Sprinkle liberally all over with salt and pepper. Flip onto other side, roast again for 25 more minutes. Let potatoes sit 3-5 minutes. Pick them up with an oven mitt and gently—gently—strike the potato against a clean surface 2-3 times to loosen/“fluff” the flesh inside. —I was cook’s help in the school’s kitchens my freshman year of college)2. Let baked potatoes cool. Leaving the crispy skins on, cube them into 1-2 inch cubes. They might get fluffy, that’s ok! Don’t stress!3. In a separate bowl, whisk the sour cream, milk, salt and pepper together. Mix into potatoes when creamy. Then add the bacon. Mix again. Add the cheese. Mix again. Each time it will get a little fluffier.Serve with extra shredded cheese and bacon bits sprinkled over! Garnish with parsley if you want a little green, but IMPORTANT NOTE: To make it cat safe, NO CHIVES, GARLIC, OR GREEN ONIONS! Those will make cats (or dogs) sick. And of course, this would be a treat sized portion. Don’t give them a full people serving, more like a taste! "

So Lupin wasn’t disguised as Gandalf-Puck’s beard after all… 8-)

Today is Red, White, and Blueberry Day. I interpret that to mean Strawberries, Red Raspberries, or maybe Cherries or Cranberries), Gooseberries, and Blueberries. Have some!

In the US, it is also Independence Day, when we celebrate our independence from the British Empire by gorging on unhealthy food, drinking weak beer, and blowing things up.

It is ironic that the first independent country in the Americas never got to pick a good name for itself, thereby getting stuck with “America” because that was all that was left. People from Canada can call themselves Canadians/Canadiens, from Mexico it’s Mexicans, from Bolivia, Bolivians, etc. We could call ourselves “United Statesians,” but that stumbles and trips off the tongue into a double pratfall. “USians,” (Youessians) sounds like “You Hessians!” which is confusing, at best. So we’re stuck with “Americans” because all the good names are taken. Is it any wonder we have an identity crisis, with such a non-specific name?

“Hi, I’m an American.”

“Yes, but what country are you from?”

Sigh. “The state formerly known as Illinois.”

The holy potato salad!

All this talk of potato salad made me remember – my Irish grandmother used to say she cooked the potatoes by “boiling them in their jackets”. Sounds grisly.
