Classic DICK TRACY comes back! This is so good, that I can’t wait to rush to my computer to see the newest daily strip. It brings back memories of the same anticipation as a child. I haven’t look this forward to a strip in decades. I hope Notta Chin Chillar returns to DICK TRACY land again and again, like some of the other characters have. Although she seems a little “bitter”, it makes for some great story telling! Great job once again on the art JOE STATON!!
If that’s oxygen going to his nose, should she really be smoking around that? NO! Oxygen is very flammable. Oxygen it self is not flammable in any way; however, it is an oxidizer which means if a fire is started it can very rapidly accelerate the speed at which the fire burns as well as creating a much hotter fire. That makes smoking around oxygen tank users very dangerous. Come on Notta, put it out!
We don’t see the cigarette in the panels with Purdy, so I would hazard that Notta put it down before moving close to him. Like many addicts, her behavior with her drug of choice (tobacco) is reckless, but she presumably thinks she has it under control.
There is always the possibility that Notta has been able to get out of the house for short crime sprees while a friend looks after Purdy, or that Purdy is somehow much more capable of action when Notta’s not looking. Or Notta’s a much better teacher than you’d expect, and has given someone the knowledge they need to hijack a Space Coupe.
lizz’s hair is black today… looks nice, a throwback to the way she used to look under fletcher and collins… kinda lol. so then, was this guy the one in the oicture frame i mentioned yesterday?
tsull2121: The guy in the picture is the guy in the wheelchair with oxygen hoses – Purdy Fallar!
As a rule, I don’t post on Sundays, but I did see a little controversy regarding a discoloration of Mysta’s face, about the location of her nose just above the bandage. I can’t help but think there is something wrong with her face at this point.
It may be “okay” by 19 May, when one of the various spoilers have mentioned that the bandages are due to come off…
On the other hand, Mike and Joe just may have another surprise in store for us, just as they did with Purdy!
Quality of story: Much better than recent stories. Things are happening left and right. Best of all, nothing is “wrapping up” in a terrible hurry. But again, haven’t we been told that this is going to be a four month story?
Comments from the last couple of days seem to be coming to a consensus, as well: As far as Mysta’s family, even a clone would seem to have the “rights” of an imposter, which is to say, probably none.
Less clear is what to expect if Mysta is the “real thing.” I’m sure the lawyers will weigh in and say that she gets nothing because she was declared “legally dead.” Still, Mysta cannot be compared to the recent character who turned up in Florida; Mysta hardly did this to herself. Must she be a victim twice over?
Very much hoping that the speculation I read in the comments yesterday is wrong – that Mysta may want to kidnap Honeymoon! As with the clone and imposter possibilities, a kidnapping now may would damage, if not terminate, any future relationship Mysta may have with her family!
Still wondering whether Staton and Curtis read our comments. Especially since Curtis was quoted by one of these posts as having said unequivocally that Mysta died in the explosion and that there would be no more trips to the moon.
Right now, he’s oh-for-one; the moon trip was Christmas.
The jury’s still out on Mysta’s death and whether she stayed dead!
Last, and certainly least: As the father of a quadriplegic daughter and recently experienced care for aging parents-in-law, I want to say this about Notta: Anyone who spends the rest of her life caring for an invalid relative can’t be all bad!
Also, regarding Lizz, and Gould’s artwork in general: Gould’s specialty was drawing monstrous villains. I don’t think he did as well with “attractive” people. I’m not even sure how he managed to get a decent Dick Tracy for the public to see.
Those early drawings of Mysta really made her look like an alien. I can’t say that she was particularly attractive, even in the Mr. Bribery story.
One thing amazing about Gould’s art were the “things” he drew. Great technical accuracy, almost like a mechanical drawing.
Check out the picture posted yesterday of Moon Maid and Junior in what was clearly a 1961 Ford Galaxy convertible, and the other late 1950s vehicle (unable to identify; not enough of the vehicle). I also remember his dynamite depiction of 1959 Fords in the Rhodent story.
I will be back when this idiotic Moon Maid plot is over. I want to like Dick Tracy; the art is great, the stories are usually intriguing, and villains like Blaze Rise and Abner Cadaver are a lot of fun. But this Moon Maid stuff should have been quietly put away. It was nonsense when Chet Gould introduced it and it hasn’t improved with age.
Purdy looks pretty bloodless, which is a sweet irony, as he used to drink blood. We can’t see his nails, but I suspect Notta keeps them trimmed short. Purdy kept a few of them long and sharp, so he could slice a throat. While it appears that Klipoff’s resuscitation was a failure (as Tracy witnessed, way back when), it is possible that he is better and faking his condition. Still, how did Notta know that it was the flight of a Coupe that brought Tracy to her door? Very interesting…
Artwork on Purdy is very Gould-like;good job fellas. There are times when some of the characters are drawn too cartoonish, which Gould almost never did. This Moon Maid arc is on pace to be your crowning achievement!!
First Notta’s hair was green, now her skin (and Tracy and Lizz’s) is yellow? The coloring jobs just get worse and worse around here. Here’s a much better job:
Take a look at the first panel from yesterday’s strip…who is that sitting beside Notta looking at Tracy on the monitor? I think someone is a good actress/actor…..
Notta Chin Chillar and Purdy Fallar were two of my favorite villains from the Moon Era. They were part of one extended story that ran from June 1967 to July 1968. I would argue it was one of the best if not the best caper from that period of the strip, in terms of creativity, characters, art, and flights of fancy.Notta and her husband George, Mr. Bribery, Piggy Butcher, Moon Maid, Pollyanna, Purdy, Mr. Intro, and Dr. Klippoff all played vital roles. There was orbiting money, a stolen space coupe, a prison escape, a high speed space chase, gangsters, sexy sirens, human slavery, an underground steel mill, a Bondian supervillain, billions of dollars worth of gold, laser guns and cannons, cryogenics, sexual trysts, treachery, vengeance, violence, death, and sorrow. It was a wild, sexy, and captivating adventure that made me a Tracy fan forever.
By the way, Al Rio also did at least one reimagining of Moon Maid. It may actually be Pollyanna, when she dressed up like Moon Maid. Either way, a great take on Moon Maid! Here’s a link to a high res version:Al Rio’s reimagining of Moon Maid / PollyannaA lower res version is pictured below:
Last, and certainly least: I like how Notta is the one telling Tracy, “You have a short memory!”
Hard to say whether she will be a “villain” once again. Even if she “knew” Tracy was going to ask about space coupes, I don’t think she and Purdy had the time to get him dressed up like that.
Still, it’s an interesting speculation since she was the one who jumped to the conclusion that the subject was space coupes that brought Tracy to her door.
tsull2121 said“actually i’m surprised NOBODY complained that the lightning bolts from her antenna were colored yellow in her first several reappearances in this strip, and now theyre blue. i guess people are distracted by how hot she is… either that, or they REALLY dont mind the errors as long as the “super hot space chick” is back.”The only “official” colors for Dick Tracy are in the Sundays, which Team Tracy does themselves. Gocomics does their own coloring for the weekday strips, and their choices may or may not correspond to the Sundays (often they do not). The 4/28 and 5/5 strips are the first two Sundays that show Moon Maid emitting laser energy from her antennae. The only other Sunday in which she has appeared was 9/30 of last year, and there was no laser energy evident that day.So, no “errors” have taken place. That’s why no one is complaining. :)

In panel one Lizz seems to be displaying a combination of amazement and disgust at Notta’s chinny chin chin hair! LOL!!!
Tracy – “Lizz, stop staring at Notta’s chin hair, it’s rude”! S.I.T.O.A.N.M.I.
