Not true! My Dr. wanted to put me on a “physican supervised diet” that cost $300 a WEEK instead of treating my underactive thyroid. (But he did tell me there’s a chiropractor in town that would do it for only $600 per month.).Funny thing was when I started the $15 a month medication the weight gain stopped….

Not that ol’ Bob would keep to a diet anyway, not even if his life depended on it.

By the time you end up in the hospital facing bypass, a plant-based diet is not going to fix you…it can only help stave off further damage but you still need the operation to fix the damage already done.

My doctor suggested a plant-based diet, didn’t say it had to be ME who ate the plants so the way I look at it there’s nothing wrong with doing it indirectly by letting a cow or pig insert itself into the food chain ahead of me……. LOL!

The diet is being unfairly demonized. The latest science indicates the lack of exercise/physical activity as the primary contributor to heart disease. Any moderate level of exercise lowers risks to a greater degree than any diet change.

A plant based diet will leave serious nutritional deficiencies and many plants, grains especially, have chemical defenses that cause inflammation and/or have antinutrients like phytic acid that block mineral absorption (and keep your dentist in business). Pasture raised meats and fats plus some of the less bad plants, especially fermented ones like raw sauerkraut, are the way to go.

Arterial bypass is a much more common surgery now, yes, but success rates vary. It is more successful for men, because the usual arterial material used for the bypass comes from the leg. And the leg artery in women is often smaller than that in men. My mother’s arterial bypass only gave her one year before it clogged. She, incidentally, had no cholesterol problem. Her problem was diabetes, which can also result in clogged arteries, among the many problems that this disease causes…

with all the chemicals used in farming, it is no wonder there is all kinds of problems. adding all those extras to fatten up cows, pigs, and other animals add up inside our bodies.but profits before people is the American way. like the heart attacks and strokes that result from the American way.

killing us off and making money on killing us off, ah Business!lol America

The connection between diet and heart trouble passes through obesity, which does not seem to apply in Bob’s case. More likely, it’s the result of his being a lawyer, which means spending much of his time in an office chair, leaning forward to study a law book or fiddle with a computer, which has been demonstrated to be bad for all those gooey things inside you, including the heart.

Co-incidentally enough, chellation removes plaque from arteries clearing those blockages right up. No doctor will ever tell you about it, and since it’s intended to remove harmful metals from your bloodstream I can’t say if it’s a good option, I’m not a Doctor. I have to wonder if they are keeping it from the public because of the fees they get from treating someone though.

The American Heart Association thinks that a well planned \vegetarian/vegan is extremely healthy. And the President-elect of the American College of Cardiology recently went vegan for health reasons. . . to say nothing of Bill Clinton, Al Gore (no, I’m not a liberal), and lots of pro-atheletes.

My dad and I went to a back surgeon to get an opinion on what to do about spine pain. He advised surgery. I asked if there was something else that could be tried first. He finally admitted that exercises taught by a physical therapist may work.It did work. The muscles just needed to be strengthened. The hospital and the surgeon lost a lot of money because I insisted on getting a COMPLETE set of choices.

Awesome, Wiley! Thank you for shining a light on the (apparently very controversial and polarizing) topic of the Standard American Diet (SAD). I hope some of your readers will follow your recommendation to watch “Forks Over Knives” and will live a long healthy life without pharmaceuticals and/or surgery.

This is an utterly idiotic strip. If you’re getting coronary BYPASS operation, then you have a blocked artery. Diet is not going to fix an artery. I would call it unbelievably irresponsible, if it wasn’t just a comic strip. Hopefully people don’t take medical advice from a comic strip. But who am I kidding, idiots think vaccines are harmful and cause autism, so they’ll believe anything.

And heck, Steve Jobs died because he tried a diet instead of using modern medicine early enough.

I wonder if, somewhere, this strip will convince to skip a bypass operation in favor of trying a diet, and Wiley will have been responsible for someone’s death. I suppose we (and he) will never know.

OMG, how wrong can you be…I’m 57 and wake up every morning with no aches or pains…haven’t had a sick day from work in a little over 10 years/ Plants give us ALL we need, plus the protection we need from toxins. Just google “plant based athletes” too and see how many there are! This is a GREAT comic! Kudos to Wiley Miller!

I did not fight and claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat plants.

In reality most of what I eat is fruits and vegetables.

All other things being equal, meat on the fin is better than meat on the wing which is better than meat on the hoof. Not all meat is created equal.

    And @Quite Dragon

I’m happy this works for you, but for those of us with multiple digestive issues (Crohn’s disease, diabetes and the like), we do have to be concerned about sufficient B-12. Crohn’s destroys the ileum, the connection between large and small intestine where B-12 is largely absorbed.-Lack of B-12 kills. It’s as simple as that.-The nutritionists who’ve advised me for years have told me that the synthetic versions added to tofu and cereals may help those who have a health ileum, but won’t do as well for those who have issues like my family.-The bacterial creation of B-12 takes place in animals. The animal products with the highest B-12 are shell fish, and my gut can’t handle them. The second highest is beef liver, which is why I eat liverwurst. (Not because I love the taste of it.)-I’ve lived to age 65. My Dad bled to death at age 40, and his parents died in their early 40s. So I must be doing something sort of right…

The key is to change your food method Before crises occur.

Which is great, except the strip is advocating changing a diet as an “alternative” to a coronary bypass surgery. If Wiley wanted to make the point that a better diet is better (duh), it would have make infinitely more sense to do it in the context of before the crisis, rather than at the point of surgery to save his life. (and despite Wiley’s cynicism, doctors don’t do open-heart surgery willy-nilly.)

Or, maybe, Wiley really believes that diet can fix an artery so blocked that a coronary bypass was necessary. And can fix it fast enough that heart failure isn’t a risk in the meantime. If so, I’d like to see him in that exact situation with his doctor, looking at a clogged artery, and see if he still thinks diet cures all ills. That idea worked so well for Steve Jobs.

The thing is, I agree with him that diet makes a huge difference to health. But this strip way, way, way in the realm of magical thinking rather than making a good point.

I switched to a plant-based diet three years ago after watching Forks Over Knives. I’ve never been healthier or felt better. I lost bodyfat without trying and put on more muscle than when I was drinking whey protein shakes. Everyone asks me my secret. It sounds really hard at first but really it’s so simple to go plant-based and brings benefits beyond any simple quick fix. Thank you for this comic!

You didn’t fight and claw your way anywhere. You ate what your parents fed you. Eat more plants. It’s better for you, it’s better for the environment, it’s better for the animals. There is no reason beyond selfishness to continue eating animals.

-_The right diet will keep the artery from being blocked in the first place._-It is not that simple. There are genetic factors involved, too. We still know much less than we should. -My cousin was vegan from age 13, skinny as a stick when he had a massive heart attack and died. Autopsy showed major coronary obstruction.

Most people that commented on this are really ignorant to the benefits of a plant based diet. I’m a 68 year old triathlete and a fitness trainer and have seen first hand what clean eating can do to one’s health so if you don’t know anything about nutrition then refrain from sounding stupid. Keep eating your way to an early death I really don’t care!
