Well, now we can be sure that Gunther was working for pay at the clinic.

Now, was Gunther docked for his week on vacation? What about his āvillageā time? Iām sure there are a few deductions for Peruvian taxes. And finally; what IS the exchange rate between the Nuevo Sol and the US dollar?
SactoSylvia about 10 years ago
Donāt cash that check at the airport, Gunther ā the fees and exchange rates will eat a big chunk of your pay!
JayBluE about 10 years ago
Being a āwealthy clinicā and probably already dealing with Americans/Westerners and World Travelers, Iām sure all that (taxes, fees, exchanges, etc) has been taken care of, and Iām sure that itās something he (and they) had been used to, by nowā¦
Angelalex242 about 10 years ago
I doubt Greg gives a damn about currency exchange. He wants to make the point Guntherās flush with cash to burn for his trip.

I have a hard time understanding all the dissing of Gunther..I believe itās because most of the readers tend to be on the younger side and I, well lets just say, far from that yet I really enjoy the strip.I believe Gunther very together, talented and has major skills..Have all forgot the strip where it seemed his importance to the Uncles business seemed to be of the highest level..actually much more so then his girl friend. I believe he knows his life work is not in Peru and he wants the education that will make him a more productive and over all happier individual as he goes through lifes challenges.Possible his girl frind will realize that but if not..then best he leave her behind and move ahead , which he will..Now hopefully back to Luan and her trialsā¦

Congrats to Flowerlady2, who was the first (though not only) person to guess the mystery voice belonged to Sofia!
Sisyphos about 10 years ago
If Gunther would stick around a while longer, Sofia might make a man of him yet! She seems to be the, uhh, instructive typeā¦.I wonder how much heās been paid for his work in Lima and (very briefly) at the remote village? Enough to cover his airfare, at least, I guess (unless he arrived on an open-ended round-trip ticket).
JoeStoppinghem Premium Member about 10 years ago
Mr Evans, ya got me..I thought it was Rosa who was talking to him..Too bad, either Rosa will find the importance of Gunther in her life, or this period of her career..Who knows, perhaps Greg will throw a few more curve balls at our friend here before he leaves home plate.

Why does Sofia remind me so much of Ann Eiffel?
schmid13 about 10 years ago
This is Fun! Ok. Gunther droppings: - The family is paying him off now that they shook the loser boyfriend off Rosa.- He uses the money for an apartment when his mom tells him he needs to move out soon. - And whoās that girl heās dancing with at the New Yearās party? Is it possible that these two, shaking off their old ways, bump in the middle?
Airman about 10 years ago
Maybe Guntherās final paycheck will be āspecialā from Rosaās very generous Uncle Doctor and take care of his college tuition.
Blakstar about 10 years ago
No U.S. taxes would be taken out. Itās called foreign earned income, and the first $75000 you get to write off.

It couldā¦but when was the last time Evans completely wrapped up a story? Every arc answers an old question, creates new ones, and then ends on a cliffhanger.
Well, the Evanses might put it āon holdā for a week or two, but they face a time issue. If theyāre still on āreal time,ā at this point, and it itās the Evansā intent for Gunther to matriculate to Moony Uni, the new semester will start soon ā in the next 1-2 weeks. So whateverās going to happen in that context needs to happen sooner, rather than later.

Ok, Sophia was (to me) unexpectedā¦ but leads me to my new prediction:+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I think we may see tomorrow that Sophia is Rosaās Uncleās wife (and assistant) and that Luisā¦ he is actually Rosaās Uncleā¦. using āLuisā as a pseudonym so neither Rosa nor Gunther knew how carefully they were being āwatchedā and ācared forā.
wiselad about 10 years ago
only way I will take back some of my disappointment with Greg would be that G got over the Mr Gray thing while traveling with the senioritas(but not shown), and that Luis intelligently knew that the bus would take a few days to get to Lima and would give time for Gunther to cool off about Mr Gray, but I still maintain that Gunther could have gone to Lima University and be as close as possible to Rosa
TiffWHO about 10 years ago
Dare he ask her to put it on the nightstand. (Cue rim-shot)
JayBluE about 10 years ago
ā2. Leo has enough free time to drive a van back and forth masquerading as a van driver.ā ^Well, it is possible , in theory, that Uncle Leo could be Luis, since Luis did say he makes āirregular tripsā up to the mountains to deliver suppplies (and mentioned that there is no set schedule, in warning Rosa and Gunther about how long it could be in his return). ā But you can add a fourth one, in that Rosa most likely would āpick up onā his voice, having spoken with him over the phone to arrange their travel there, and the jobs at the clinic, in the first placeā¦
m98115 about 10 years ago
Rosa could have at least hired a woman for Gunther.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 10 years ago
Has Rosa picked up all the sticks on the mountain and raked away all the rocks? Iāll bet the villagers will be glad to see her leave, too! Time to move on to the next village, where they so desperately need her valuable āhelpā.

Since when does giving a boy a hug turn her into a cougar? Get a life!
Argy.Bargy2 about 10 years ago
-āBig Sister is watching you!ā-She didnāt say sheās been watching him. She said she knew his locations all during the tour, since Luis had told her that he put Gunther on that bus. Itās not that hard to find out what the tour itinerary is. If you are required to hand a final paycheck to someone, you need to know where to find them, right?
Argy.Bargy2 about 10 years ago
Iām still waiting for the epiphany that hits Gunther and makes him realize that he doesnāt have to control his motherās life, AND that he can drink coffee. It didnāt happen on the tour bus, and the hug from Sofia didnāt change anything. Maybe it will be the size of the paycheck?
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen about 10 years ago
Everybody needs a hug now and then.Moneyās nice too.
JayBluE about 10 years ago
Something interesting: ā
ā Sort of like ābookendsā to Guntherās experience in Peru. ā And in both strips, Rosa said she ācouldnāt tell (him) what to doā, but also check out Guntherās part of the conversation (as far as his feelings in the matter are concerned)ā¦Bogy Premium Member about 10 years ago
I think what Gunther realized in his time in the village is that it isnāt that he doesnāt want to help in a place like that, but he needs more education to come back and make a real difference, more than just somebody who can rake leaves and dig ditches. Rosa hasnāt realized that yet. She would be more valuable as a doctor in that clinic sometime in the future than as an unskilled laborer. Give her a couple of years, she may come to that realization eventually. Gunther just got there sooner.
JayBluE about 10 years ago
More of the āinterestingāā¦ ā
wiselad about 10 years ago
if Rosa had asked him to stay(even thought she knew it was not his true desire to āhelpā the village), guess what? he would have stayedā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ if she had asked him to wait in Lima, guess what? he would have stayed in Lima and work at the clinic

I think a lot of the commentators are older men.
Gunther has his arms at his side, stiff and uncomfortable when a beautiful woman hugs him. He will be a virgin forever. He is way too uncomfortable with his body to ever get physical.

doverdan about 10 years ago
Many things go on in the Luanniverse that are not depicted in the strips..Gunther and Rosa surely met her Uncle in Lima many, many times over the months they were all three there..Various sets of proclaimed lovers obviously had more private moments together than we have seen in the strips..Luann must have been attending her college classes ā she had her last final of the semester. ETC..Not all the above had to be shown. But . . . did we have a whole semester without Berniceās roommate showing up? Seems that should have been shown.
wiselad about 10 years ago
LOL, ( but we have to remember that Levi will invent new excuses to prove just in his mind that I am wrong)ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.. but all it shows is that Toni and Brad do not go to Arcades(or at least not as much as Q and Luann), they stay at home ;) wonder what they do if they stay at home?
wiselad about 10 years ago
Toni and Brad had some scenes where they talked about going to a place more private at his house. and there was no one there(no TJ and no Shannon), and usually Greg makes one or 2 references to something, and does not continuously do the same reference again and again but should be inferred that it happens on the ānot drawn periodsā, he will not make his strip a PG version of 9 chickweed lane(where it is PG17 and real close to R)

San Marcosā prestige in Latin America mainly arises from its renowned faculty and alumni. It is the only university in Peru with a Nobel Prize laureate among its alumni: Mario Vargas Llosa (Literature). San Marcos is also recognized for the quality of its curricular contents, its very competitive admission process, as well as for being a leading center of scientific research. Several Peruvian and Latin American influential thinkers, researchers, scientists, politicians and writers have studied there, which underscores San Marcosā leading role as an educational institution in the history of Peru and the world.

The National University of Engineering was founded in 1876 by the Polish engineer Edward Jan Habich as the School of Civil Constructions and Mining Engineers (Spanish: Escuela de Ingenieros de Construcciones Civiles y de Minas), but has traditionally been known as School of Engineers (Escuela de Ingenieros). At the time of its foundation, there was a growing demand for engineers in Peru due to the rapid development of mining and communications.
Today, the National University of Engineering is widely regarded as the foremost science and technology oriented university in PerĆŗ, many of its alumni occupying today positions of leadership in the fields of Industry, Academia and Government.

Thereās just one day left of this story before next week. I hope there will be some more acknowledgement (maybe by Sophia) of Guntherās IT contributions to the Lima clinic. I have noted in the panels where he and Rosa were in their cubicle, that Rosa had this attached mouth piece suggesting that she only did routine answering of phone calls while Gunther, who has never been shown wearing such garb, made real technical contributions. This could set the tone for Gunther picking a major and becoming the bearded geeky college student.

āWe find out that it is someone we all knew was in Peru, and she wasnāt a major character that we cared about in the least AND a hackneyed explanation why sheās at the airport.ā.Unbeknownst to anyone before I made it up out of thin air is the āfactā that āsheā is really Luis in drag AND the elusive uncle (the Jimmy Hoffa rumor is unsubstantiated).
JayBluE about 10 years ago
I have noticed, too, that Tiffany can be vain and arrogant, but that her demeanor changes when itās with Bernice or when sheās in a situation like at the Daycare center, where she does show she can get along with others, at least to get something done (another reference would be the volleyball tourney, or the recent time that she, Luann Bernice and Delta helped comfort each other while they settled in to their new dorm/lives in college, via Skye)ā¦.
