Alright! So far, we have a bevy of villains ranging from 1942 (Pruneface) to Shoulders (1946), including 88 Keyes and Shaky (as well as a mention of the name, “Trigger” – as in “Trigger Doom” from 1941). All we’re really missing from that time period so far ARE Flattop and Itchy. I don’t include recently-revived foes like BB-Eyes & Measles, etc. So what are my conclusions? Absolutely none! But, I still love it, no matter where this is headed! STILL entertaining!
This is just a wild guess, but I’m thinking that this little costume party is going to last until Halloween, and then all will be revealed. The heroes dressed up as villians, but still acting like heroes — and vice-versa?
It’d be interesting to see old Stooge once more, even if this really is all just a masquerade…
The Brow (Al) seems to be the valet for the mysterious Chalice. A Gentleman’s Gentleman—very different from his non-Midnite Mirror incarnation! Young master Bud has all the street word.Okay. Now what?
For whoever was wondering, it does indeed seem from today’s strip that Bud is on a very friendly first-name basis with “Al” and probably with The Chalice, too.
The Chalice has a sumptuous abode. Good to see Brow and Master Jenkins on the side of right. Can’t recall Brow ever smiling.Tang tasted best when used to wash down a savory Space Food Stick.
Perhaps the Brow is the Al mentioned earlier. but that seems relatively immaterial - just as the character transposition we’ve been seeing here appears . . .A play, a movie, or (Diet’s) alternate world could be a logical explanation, but if this goes on into next week before that’s revealed . . . it seems half the original story time to make the point ?One week of strips, would’ve done just fine
You begin to ‘understand’ now - why, TMS once insisted on Six Weeks story ‘frameworks’ . . .That is, get to the point, cut out unnecessary WAFFLING . . .… that resembles a page or two out of Matt Masterson’s Dick Tracy Rogues Gallery - which just about everybody here has seen . . .Some seem fine with the way things are going (polite?) But you begin to realize the Authors are “straying” from tradition, perhaps off the page (?) when 2 posters (cbreze and bobarion) tell you SO, and another (a ‘decades long’ reader) Bobby Thomas speaks of ‘ceasing’ to read the strip’
There’s an insightful old saying from Tennis . . .
“Never change a Winning Game . . .Always change a Loosing Game !”
Alderman Zeld (1930’s political flunky for Big Boy)Alex the Timer (1954 bomb maker – Open Mind Monty gang)Vera Alldid (Cartoonist – Sparkle’s former husband)Alpha (another name for the 1950’s – Mr. Crime)
What’s funny for me is that in the original story, The Brow was an enemy agent, implied to be Axis, and so it wouldn’t be impossible to imagine him with a German accent. Here, he says, “Master Jenkins” which implies a British accent. In either reality, there’s a possibility that The Brow is a foreigner.
Gweedo noticed.I see that you guys are going to great lengths to dig up attendees for your party, Bill !-——————————————————————-.We plan to dig up all of our neighbors for the 27th! We have our shovels ready!
Gweedo cautioned,Be careful not to poke me while you are digging.-—————————————————————————————.I’ll tell Igor to be careful when he reaches the recent occupants section.
Suggestions that this could be a “fever dream” of either Mumbles or BB Eyes brings up another possibility – what about Fritz Ann? She could very well be sedated after her injury. I think someone may have suggested this right at the start of this sequence.
It took a long time to reveal “Venus” and “Mr Bigg” so the Chalice could take time…you never know…with all the roles reversed…traditionally the “Bad Guys” had nick names and smokes in their mouths…the “Good Guys” had given names and were righteous in their behavior toward Justice….some of us have been Tracy fans for a long time, from childhood into our elderly years….not that we’re Old, we just been young a long time….TBC..

I for one am loving the long build up, it gives us a chance to see Staton draw all the classic villains.

If it weren’t for the names, I’d wonder if everyone being look-alikes was just a massive coincidence.

So the villains have nick-names while the heroes have given names…its all turned around in the Midnight Mirror…I Think…TBC.
