Yes, all about Luann and no one else. Though flights and hotel to NYC at Christmas is expensive as hell. Especially since Luann is waiting till the last minute. Wish I had that kind of spare change when I was their age.

this matter is very prudent, this is probably the thing that is gonna tear apart their relationship.

Everyone immediately jumps on Luann for being self-centered. Gee, like that is a big surprise with a teenager slowly growing into a young adult!! Lets see how this arc works out before jumping to conclusions about her, or about the relationship. I think the relationship will weather any issue, and somehow both things will occur eventually, New York, and the theater. I suggest withholding judgment. After all the strip is about Luann and Luannverse.
Pointspread over 9 years ago
Quill has not said he agreed to do it, if he did without asking Luann first that would be wrong, since he had a commitment to go to NYC.

âFrankâs dream. We donât know what Nancyâs dream is.â^As with most (happily) married couples, Frankâs dream is the same as Nancyâs dream. â If Nancy wasnât âon boardâ with using their savings (of course not counting the outside investment money), she would have made sure Frank knew.. for sure⊠she is polite and tactful, but she doesnât seem to play when it comes to things such as her money⊠â
JayBluE over 9 years ago
âSo because she enjoyed the work, saving money doesnât count as hard work?â^You left out the key part of what I (according to the dialogue in that strip) was saying⊠she chose to work there, for the love of the job. The âsaving moneyâ part came to her as a bonus âflash of inspirationâ. Sure, saving money is work. But it doesnât mean that it was her primary motivation for that job. We also donât know if she was easily just âsetting this sum asideâ, or if she really had to âscroungeâ. Itâs not to put down the first thing, but the degree of her âsaving upâ could be really telling as to the point of âhard workâ. â Or to put it this way: You stated that it âonly takes 15 min. to âmake a reservationââ (paraphrasing). Well, to apply it to this point, what if it didnât âtake muchâ for her to save up?
JayBluE over 9 years ago
âHave you followed this strip lately? Theyâve done no planning whatsoever.â^
JayBluE over 9 years ago
âAgain, this was not Nancyâs idea, sheâs just along for the ride. Not once did Frank ever say âThis is my ideaâŠbut do you have any ideas?â. It was âthis is my idea, and Iâm selling it as our idea by using the word âusââ.
^And again, the key point (as told in her expression in the aforementioned strips) lets us know that she is okay with all of this. She again seems to be the type to let you know when she doesnât want to do something. Sheâs not one to âmince wordsâ when it comes to her family. She easily puts Luann in her place. She lets Toni know (at that time) that she isnât âtoo fondâ of her (though after the engagement, Toni and she were able to âhash it outâ). She expresses to Frank how sheâd like him to âtake better care of himselfâ, among other things. -And again , like most happily married couples, the two can âtake turnsâ spearheading an endeavor. The point is, it doesnât matter who originated the idea of that particular dream or endeavor, they both embark upon it together. Nancy seems to be the quintissential example of this.

âUnless sheâs working for free, sheâs not there âfor the love of the jobâ. She enjoys it and thatâs a bonus, but itâs still work.â^Read the strip again. She says sheâs there for âthe love of the jobâ. For the passion she has for that line of work. â âDoesnât matter, still counts as work, and still makes her statement valid. Saving isnât easy, just look at Americaâs financial state for proofâŠ. She did it for months, which is more than we can say for anyone else when it comes to planning.â^Read again, what I said: _". _^The original point you brought up has to do with âhow hard is it to make a reservation?â. Now look at the final part of my response: Or to put it this way: You stated that it âonly takes 15 min. to âmake a reservationââ (paraphrasing). Well, to apply it to this point, what if it didnât âtake muchâ for her to save up?" . â Your original point was to contend that it wasnât hard work to make a phone call for a reservation. People work as logistics and booking agents, and also some have built websites and the like for such a thing. So if you want to say that any saving of money is hard work, wouldnât it follow reason to have to change your original statement, saying that âmaking a reservation isnât hard workâ?

âIf your wife said âHey, my dream is to go to Egyptâ, and you go, would I be correct in saying that you got to live out your dream of going to Egypt? I donât think so. Itâs not YOUR dream, itâs hers.â^Yes, because thatâs what being married is about. âPartners For Life, Partners In Lifeâ. â We just recently purchased a car. It wasnât the particular car I was looking for. And though it was purchased at the place that I also wanted to get it from, it wasnât done with the particular plan I had in mind, to acquire it. However, it is the car that we ended up with. It is the car that we share. I ended up ânamingâ our car, and also find no reason to complain, as we use that car to share our âhappy travelsâ together. â We find âour placeâ in the otherâs dream. Itâs just like getting on a swing set, or going down the slide as kids. You âtake turnsâ, and find âmore happiness in giving, than receivingâ (a quote from the Bible).

âIf youâre trying to prove that Frank likes to pawn work off onto his wife while he goofs off, youâre doing a great job. Happily married!â^The point of that strip wasnât to expose Frankâs goofy way of trying to muddle through that task. It was to show that it is implausible to think that they had no idea of the preparation involved, as during that week, Frank and Nancy pored over the various documents and organizational methods needed in this endeavorâŠ.

Luann has always been full of failings. We know them well. They have been the source of much of the humor in the strip..Bernice has had fewer failings, but quite a few. Sarcasm, jealousy, mindless over enthusiasm, etc..Delta had failings (loud, boisterous, etc.), but with the need for political correctness, they all disappeared after a few years and she became Miss Altruism..Knute has many failings, some weird, but they seem forgivable.
Aaron seemed perfect, but his failings became evident. Quill had some failings, but not anymore. None since Karen came aboard..Gunther had a few more or less forgivable failings like shyness, but recently he went cranky and at times obnoxious.Rosa had no failings, but went weird.
Tiffany has had terrible failings (seeming to center on vanity), but we are hoping to find out _why,_ and maybe forgive her a bit.
Dirk had horrible failings, but seemed to reform almost magically.
T.J. has real failings in the area of honesty, but not so bad otherwise.
Brad was a horrible slob, but came out of it. Toni had a few failings, but we donât see them any more.
Shannon has a lot of failings, but we know why (her age and her parentage) and can judge her kindly.

_ âWas it your dream or not?â_^(Sigh.) When you get married, your partnerâs dreams become yours. It becomes like âsuddenly becoming a pair of conjoined twinsâ. Two minds, two heartsâŠ" one flesh" (another Bible quote). â Or like a business. Sure, one is the partner with all the savvy business acumen. The other is the one with âall the right connectionsâ. One says: Letâs go with providing this product. The other says: âNo, Iâd rather go with this oneâ. Months (or years) later, they went ahead with the idea of the first one. They both get the credit. Why? Because they went into business, together . The same with marriage. Most people are familiar with the maxim âTogether we stand, divided we fallâ. Itâs the together part that keeps businesses and marriages going. You become a partner in life. Blondie had all the bright ideas. Dagwood had⊠well⊠Blondie. But in the end, they both take credit and share . My wifeâs dream is my dream. My wifeâs pain is my pain. My wifeâs tears become my tears. My wifeâs laughter âinfectsâ me and becomes my laughter. Again, when you get married, itâs no more âI, me, mineâ. Itâs ours .

For those who are taking Luann to task for being âself centeredâ in wanting that vacation, you need to remember that anyone who has counted on a vacation would be very unhappy to be told that it has to be postponed. Thatâs not being self-centered. Thatâs called âbeing disappointed.â
And as far as Quillâs comment about how hard her parents have worked to make this warehouse into a theater, seems as if most of the work has been done by âMr Grayâs associatesââŠ.

Rosa planned a trip to help her uncle without ever asking what exactly her uncle did. She also thinks that picking up sticks is helping, rather then getting an education in something useful. . . . -ââââââââââââââ-Yes, thatâs what I meant when I said:âRosa had no failings, but went weird.â.She seemed quite reasonable all the way through High School. .Her actions afterward (chucking Yale for Peru, not finding out anything about her uncleâs work in Peru, living rather oddly with Gunther in the hotel for a month, then staying on in a remote village to pick up sticks, etc.) were to me totally WEIRD â not at all in keeping with the image we had had of her in High School.

Luann has a point. Sooner or later, Quill has to decide where his relationship with Luann ranks in priority relative to everything else in his life. Right now, itâs after everything else. gromit82 over 9 years ago
I disagree that Luann being immature is the premise of the strip. Granted, there are some plotlines that involve her being immature, but far from all of them. She couldnât have been appointed lead teacher at the day camp from being immature.
JayBluE over 9 years ago
First off, thank you! â Secondly, yes, we discuss courses of action. I know this may infuriate some, but I appreciate the Bibleâs mentioning about âsitting down to calculate the cost of a tower before setting out to build itâ, so as to be able to plan it out and not have to âabandonâ in the middle of it, which would make one look foolish. Also it mentions sitting down for âconfidential talkâ, the key to planning and getting to know anotherâs feelings. â However, I wasnât trying to validate not doing so, in speaking of what Quill was saying. I was just pointing out the fact that Quill had already decided inside, but even furhter, that he was trying to persuade his GF to see the benefit in postponing the NY trip to help her parents (a tactful way to get a âwin winâ), though Luann had not seen this yetâŠ.she is disappointed in having her âexpectations postponnedâ (another quote), so it hasnât âsunk inâ, yet, that heâs not. Heâs trying to âadjust the plansâ so that all can benefit from the arrangement/plans, not just two. As Spock would say: âThe needs of the many outweigh the needs of the fewââŠ.
JayBluE over 9 years ago
So, in essence, he is still planning with her, trying to reason on the matter, which is different from being arbitrary. â Also of note, a strip posted above shows Luann doing the same thing to Quillâs earlier plan of going to NY with him in the summer as he interned, asking if he would mind if she âchanged the planâ, so to speak, so as to take her summer intern assignment. So, in reality, she âchanged the plansâ first, and now he is also attempting to change the plans. Her change had to do with her internship, and now his wanting to change has to do with her parentsâ opportunity. She may have forgotten about that little factâŠ.

JayBluE over 9 years ago
âI think Quill is remarkably mature. Some call that boring.â^âI guess everyone else will have their own take on it, but I donât find Quillâs maturity to be boring. Itâs as MJ used to put it, heâsâŠ. too perfect. He seemed to have no reaction to other characters, and always seemed to go along with anything Luann would do, and would never seem to offer Luann any sort of âno, this isnât right to doâ counsel (as he seems to do more of, now). I used to call him Qcumber, and another (Brd?) referred to him as a "cardboard cutout, for similar reasons. When Tiffany tried to "wooâ him at the Drama Camp, he was a little too ânonchalantâ in turning down her advances, waiting until just before the play went on stage finally say for her to stop, and then when he did it, it was by yelling for her to stop . He seemed to not even âflinch with any sort of dislikeâ whenever Tiffany even flirted. He seemed more of a âbackground/standing silhouetteâ character, than a âfeatureâ character. But lately, there seems to be a little more âdimensionâ to his overall characterâŠ.

Youâre so right about sticking with an auto dealer that does you right! With a grocery store, you might put up with this thing or that, as a trade off to purchasing cheaper, or the quality you want- but with a 2 ton (or more) vehicle (especially for what you pay for one), you need that service that gets you your title, etc., and that you can go back to when issues arise. Thereâs a few on Route 1 and Route 202 (somewhere near that intersection, on the way to Pennsylvania) that is reputable in that way, as a few others (like maybe Jones or a couple of others). Same thing goes with auto mechanics. You always end up liking the one, and the others are like: âMehâ⊠â But in this case, we got our car from an auto auction. The trade off for us was that we got it at a price that we wanted, though I would have liked to have âshaved offâ a few more dollars (try couple hundred). I wanted to wait for a later time, but she was ready to do it sooner, so I went ahead and looked for a couple of places to go, and the one we chose had advantages over the others (the one big one being the engine was tested and guaranteed to run!)âŠ.

âBe a fighter for what you believe in.â^Well, I do at least try to be! Though thereâs something to be said too for âa time to keep quiet and a time to speakâ. My wife will tell you, Iâm passionate about what I believe to be right, and I donât like to see people being mistreated, and will speak up about things, but Iâm also âdual naturedâ in the fact that it takes a lot to get me riled up. Sheâll also tell you that Iâm the kind of person who is the âeye in the hurricaneâ. My usual M.O. is to try to be the âvoice of reasonâ when someone gets flustered or upset, and to try to put forth the method of not hastily taking an action or be too quick to react, until youâve either gotten all the facts and thought the situation through, or until time has proven someone or something to be untrue. And also to make sure to find a tactful way to speak of the matter, first and foremost (though as we all know, there are many out there who make it such a temptation to not be so tactful). â Itâs funny that on both sides of my family and my wifeâs, are both the âeven temperedâ side, and the âOh, no you did-nt!â side, Lol! â As far as âbosses and bureaucratsâ go, though, I usually have to âtake those cases upstairsââŠwhere thereâs better resources to handle it, than I couldâŠ

Ha ha!!!! â But truth be told, I remember how Greg himself called the character âboringâ (according to the oft-quoted article in the San Diego Union Tribune). That is why he initially had Quillâs dad to call him to go back to Australia that first time. He was âdoomedâ to the volcano, right along with Aaron Hill. The article also explained the reasoning as to how it was decided to bring him back (as Luannâs eventual âpermanent suitorâ, or at least a long term relationship, a suggestion by Karen,)⊠to signify Luannâs growing up process
JayBluE over 9 years ago
Yes! No matter how gruff, I would appreciate his skills- as long as he has knowledge about my particular make and model, and knows what to do and when to do it, and will be fair and reasonable with the costs, Iâll value his service, for sure!!!â We had a garage in our neighborhood who tried to get us to fork over 1400 for the initial inspection, 1000 of that, for âjustâ the fuel pump and line, itself! Having had the car for enough time, we knew something wasnât right in their dealings and assessment (they even tried to âjack upâ the inspection fee from 68 to 80 bucks). Not to mention, we had the car serviced at a prior place, where the manager gave us a very fair discount (and the parts in question at our time there were noted to be in working order when we went there, so we knew something was up) at this new place. â Naturally, we decided to go some place else to get it inspected and that one didnât try to get over on us for any parts (the inspection revealed that the car was good to go, and didnât need any extra repairs- the only charge was the usual reg. sticker fee to the state)!
