OK. Time for an unreality check. This IS an illusion, but why is the ditto interacting with Wally & Kirbee? What does this have to do with lost “soles”?
Well, our intrepid trio is back, and someone is interacting with them…Curiouser and curiouser said Alice. Now they need to hop down the rabbit… er… elevator holes.
I was wondering when Wally and The Gang were going to get in on the action. But I shudder to think someone might suggest sending Chic’s little buddy, Irving, down the shafts…
Just like they were there in Holly’s house and there at the baby shower, now they are here with the others wondering what everyone else is wondering, except they DO know this is a re-inactment.Still, just like when Wally got knocked out, he could, be hurt here too. I’m wondering if Holly can see Wally or would that be messing with the story too much?
Point of order: the traditional thing to do would be for them to take off their clothes and make ropes out of them. At least if you subscribe to the sitcom way of life…
I see that the director of this little story has decided that its time to interact with our little group. This time, instead of Lyn giving Wally a cross look, we have someone speaking to him. Haven’t seen that since the restaurant scene.
There is so much to love in the craft, creation, and detail of this strip in general, and the latest story arc in particular. I’m totally, utterly gripped. Can’t wait till Wednesday….
It makes sense, I suppose — they couldn’t “really” be in the story until this point, when they’re in a group of fellow mutants. Any earlier, and they would have affected the course of events too wildly.
The twist could be the illusion was an illusion and this has been reality all along, with the dittos hiding them to keep them from affecting the present until now. Dinner in the diner was real, Lyn’s interaction was him thinking he was seeing things, and now Wally and company have to save this world by leading everyone to Endtown and safety. But then Wally’s going to have to avoid Holly because they’re not supposed to meet for another six years. So that’s probably not it.
Previous ditto flashbacks, like Sparkplug’s silent hell in Hillside and the Bordavia story that Marx arranged for Wally and Holly were both silent and didn’t have any physical effect on the group. The fact that they are hearing sounds and feeling effects suggests that something more is going on. I suspect that this story is being told by the ship’s computer, which is using dittos to read Holly’s memory and is adding other bits in, like view of the missiles streaking over the water. My guess is that this ship has a lot more dittoes than Marx had and is able to use them to engineer solid illusions including a car wreck in which Wally got knocked out cold. The sound could come from a clever use of dittos or the ship’s sound system. This craft might actually have a holodeck for the entertainment of the captain.
What if… And mind you I’ve seen some similar post apocalyptic themes… What if the dittos aren’t just illusion generators, but since they’re a bit on the psychically tuned side, they’re also recorders? And what if they don’t just record events, but also peoples minds? That’s the only logical reason they could provide backstory even in areas none of the main characters have even experienced.
So those interactions? They’re actually interacting with the formerly living. And Wally’s ability to “control” the dittos? They just wanted him to think that, and they actually chose to work with him.

Perhaps they could dive head first down the shafts. Don’t mutants heal faster?

Very, very strange. All we can guess is that the dittos have somehow advanced to the point where they can communicate audibly as well as visually.

Or something is going on outside of the reenactment, which could affect wally, holly and company in the now…

If the Wally party are going to experience something violent-like the car wreck-we at least know that Holly and Doc survived it.
