I do this at least once a week, but, being retired I don’t have to be up by any certain time. I sometimes am awake until 3am or so then finally go to sleep and wake up at 6:30 and am wide awake and ready to go……..until about 10.
Elly could get one of those alarm clocks that play Reveille, followed by a recorded shouting of “Turn to!”, then “Rise and shine!” If that does not get John on his feet, nothing will!
An ibuprofen at bedtime helps with frequent peeing, as does cutting down on liquid intake in the evening. A melatonin tablet (natural sleep hormone) helps when you’re wide awake at bedtime, or in the middle of the night. Avoid bright lights before bedtime. When I worked night shift, a bottle of Russian Imperial Stout at 6 a.m. helped me get to sleep, though my house was on a busy street.
When I was working I had two lights with timers and the clock radio… first one light would come on, then the second, finally the radio… I still overslept on occasion. I really do like sleeping in these days, it’s one of several reasons I haven’t been trying too hard to find another job.
.
The worst deal from times past was working mids and trying to sleep during the day. Everyone schedules crap in the middle of your “night” when you sleep during the day and they refuse to schedule in the middle of your “day” just because that’s when they sleep… it never seemed fair to me.
Lynn’s Notes:This is the story of my life. As a non-sleeper, I am often reading or doing my mail in the middle of the night. Oddly enough, when I have an early morning deadline, I manage to sleep so soundly that I am comatose when the alarm goes off. Strange stuff!
Since I retired in 1998 the clock no longer rules my life. If I have an appointment, I make it between 11am and 2 pm in order to miss all the cars of people who are in a hurry to get to work on time, or are in a hurry to go home

Get two Big Ben wind up alarm clocks. Wind them up, set them, put one on the table next to you and the other across the room. You’ll get up!

This is apparently; universal! Myself, I have an old Tom cat that gets on my chest and stares at me and purrs loudly if I dare to sleep late.
