So, Dad kicks Calvin out of the house because he thinks Calvin should be outside getting fresh air and exercise. Then Dad goes back in the house. What’s good for the kid is good for the dad. Dad needs to get outside for some fresh air and exercise too. Maybe toss a football with Calvin or shoot baskets with him or they can go bike riding together. Use the outdoors for Father/son bonding time. And it will keep Calvin from going to other kid’s houses to watch cartoons.
Wow, that is just like our house growing up. My Dad used to scream at us kids to “go outside and get the stink blown off from you”. But you couldn’t see Bugs Bunny/Road Runner. Wrestling and “Monster Theater” (Godzilla and Friends) from outside. We liked the stink much more.
“It’s going to be a grim day when the world is rung be a generation that doesn’t know anything but what it’s seen on TV!” … and we are there and yes it’s grim.
If I could pick any day and age to grow up in, I’d pick the exact day on which I was born. Being a kid in the 70s was incredible. Sitting in the floor on Saturday morning with a bowl full of unabashed, sugary goodness. Nothing was ever better.
Well if you think a generation that learned everything it knows from TV is grim, just wait for the generation who learned everything it knows from its phone. It’s called Regurgitation U., and just like coffee filtered over and over it gets worse as time goes on.

I wouldn’t trade being a kid in the 50s for anything!
In Japan the holiday and weekend programming in the late 60’s was something else. A new monster every week, hours of children oriented monster and cartoon shows.
Interesting…three strips about Calvin lamenting the woods being bulldozed, and now a strip where Calvin would rather “spend (his) freedom…eating chocolate cereal and watching cartoons” than playing outside on a beautiful weekend day. Hmmm…
“He’s a complicated boy, but no one understands him but his tiger – Calvin (whatever his last name is)!” Virtual internet points for whoever gets the reference first!
Watterson often cleverly criticizes the act of watching television. He appears to as anti-TV as “Dad” is. But what’s great is that we all have memories of our parents saying the exact same thing on Sat. morning…We can all relate to this strip.
At least Calvin is watching a high quality Bugs Bunny cartoon. I have an 8 year old and trust me, cartoons are worse today than ever.
Around my house if you weren’t doing anything, watching tv counted as not doing anything, then they (parents) were certain to find something for you to do.
I spent time outdoors because we had outdoors and no TV. My son grew up taking his dog up into the hills above town, rarely watched TV. Our granddaughter is hooked on phone and I pad as her “other” grandmother thought sugar and glued to a phone was the rule. (She plays outside at our house.)
My dad refused to buy a TV, calling it the “idiot box”. When well meaning church friends bought one for us, he stuffed it in the attic. So afternoons, before dad got home, we would sneak up to the attic, and figured out how to run an extension cord and adjust the antenna to watch cartoons.
There is a fan comic called “Hobbes and Bacon” showing life after Calvin and Susie get married. They have a daughter nicknamed Bacon who discovers Hobbes and starts a whole new relationship. It’s really fun.

Doesn’t Calvin have any male friends to watch cartoons with? Why did he go to Susie’s house first?

Is this the reason why many local stations cancelled Saturday morning cartoons?
