Rule number one for dealing with guys: Just ask for what you want. Don’t hem and haw, don’t beat around the bush, and don’t resort to trickery.

He must need a place to crash.

Yeah, all that stuff about Bernice. But, for those of us who were intrigued by Piro, a tiny bit of progress in understanding his backstory: if he’s asking for help with a class, he must actually be a student there. Now, why is he a homeless student?

I wonder if Piro will turn out to be smarter and more substantial than some have thought, and if he will become Bernice’s boyfriend for real?

And it’s possible that next week will come back to the issue of Luann beginning to find her own significant other. That issue has been on hold for over a year now, since she broke up with Quill.

“You took Mr. Roth’s class, right? I could use some help. Can you loan me the money to do my laundry? Mr. Roth won’t let me crash in his basement until I wash this towel I wear around my neck.”

Oh Geez, GE throws the famous misdirection play, and those followers who are played are all put out and p’od to the extreme. Corporate crap indeed. A “cop out” indeed. “A shocker, A joke” indeed. That is precisely the point. This is brilliant. I personally have been saying all along that all she had to do, and the logical thing to do was to simply wait and ask him when she sees him. Now, having seen the nonsense of her plan to try to get the number from a locked phone, lo and behold here comes Piro, who it turns out, is apparently a student, who needs her help!! And he wants to exchange numbers. This is Luannverse, and imaginary world, and having pivots like this is not only possible, but all part of the fun. Plus it shows that Bernice is not the evil harridan some have made her out to be, maybe a bit lovesick, and a bit confused given the TV incident, but not evil, or a stalker. That was so ridiculous. How does one stalk to get a phone number anyway? How can one stalk when she does not even know where to find the stalkee? Moreover we find that Piro, a rather handsome, and hardly bumlike mystery man, is not only friendly, but offers to exchange numbers, so that he can get help in a class. He may just be a student short of money, who is navigating that issue adroitly. I have a friend who had to sleep in other student’s dorm rooms for a semester in college, and borrowed their meal cards to eat, but graduated, and retired several years ago, with a six figure salary, and a very nice retirement after a very successful career. It is possible something like this is happening with Piro. If it is, I think we can look for Bernice to totally fall for him. “Overpriced crap”? Maybe I am being too literal, but how much do you pay to look at Luann, and since when is GE a big corporation?

Let us see if I have all this straight:

1. Bernice will help Piro out with Mr. Roth’s class and she will fail her big test.

2. Bernice has not quite figured out that the reason Piro was in the library is that he has been sleeping in the stacks.

3. The swapped numbers means that Piro will continue to visit with Bernice so she can help him pass the class.

4. The swapped numbers means that Piro considers Bernice a target for his next place to sleep over.

5. The swapped numbers is part of an elaborate scheme to frame Bernice for stealing the television.

6. After failing to convert Tiffany to the Cult of Dr. Heald, Piro thinks that Bernice would be perfect to join up. She must just be desperate enough.

7. Piro says he has been looking for Bernice, because he is secretly attracted to girls who wear suit coats with their t-shirt and jeans.

8. Bernice thinks Piro is going to swap phone numbers with her, when in reality he just plans to swap actual numbers. Dialogue ensues where Piro talks about how he loves the number 5 because of the 5-pointed star burned into his head by the Cult of Dr. Heald.

Right, Bernice – you really did not know that you never swapped numbers. You might as well catch up on some other stuff you didn’t swap.

I thought for a moment Bernice fell asleep while studying and was dreaming. This arc turning into romance would be too simple. There’ll be another twist…maybe later after some different arcs.

I love how in Bernice’s mind, the reason all this was wrong was because it was distracting her from a test. Not that lying, abuse of authority and invasion of privacy are wrong on their own terms; no, the issue is that she’s supposed to be studying and all that extra stuff is interfering with that. Once again, she doesn’t learn a damn thing from her mistakes and is all set to abuse her position as RA again in the future. She’ll just make sure there’s no other commitments in the way first. Plus as long as it’s Tiffany she’s doing it to, it’s okay.

People want “instant gratification” but the comics teach me to slow down and focus. I have theories and I love that these drawings are real to us. How are Delta and Aaron Hill doing?

Bernice needs to look back at the same mistake she made years ago in high school when she fell for someone totally wrong for her .

This strip is for the commentators who were complaining that Bernice et al don’t do any studying or apparently go to any classes (other than Luann and her art class) …

So Bernice plays if dumb & innocent. This seems totally out of character.

I’m just glad this ended without major drama between Bernice and Tiffany. Since we know pretty much nothing about Piro it is very much possible that he began as an actual commuting student. Life situations change all the time, perhaps his studies are still being paid for but he has found himself homeless. We don’t even know if he’s homeless, it’s just been surmised. He could in fact just have a bad home life and from time to time feels the need to escape it.My nephews girlfriend now lives with their family since her mother chose her new boyfriend over any of her children or she could have been homeless. Just saying.

Someone has already nailed it. It is possible to be both a student and homeless. Maybe his grants/loans were delayed one semester. It’s not too hard to couch surf and spend a lot of time in student center/library.

Ha! Wonderful conclusion!!!! Bernice comes to her “senses” before breaking into Tiffany’ s phone. Then we have proof that Piro is a student, AND he had been thinking he and Bernice should exchange numbers. Now of course, Bernice will probably do poorly on her exam because she focuses on helping Piro, but perhaps that will mean she gets a B+ instead of an A. I hope this arc continues on Monday.

Those who were impatient with the measured pace of the strip are now quarreling with the strip moving on in an interesting direction. What Piro can help Bern with is to move her out of her own head a bit. But these are early days.

She won’t have trouble passing the test. I once had an exciting relationship in college and, horrors, got a B+ on a big exam. I wouldn’t change that for the world!

Wow, a lot if info and answers are packed into this last strip! Bernice may have some ‘splaining to do to Tiffany if Tiff ever asks her about the dorm inventory. A real turn-around for Bernice so let’s hope she’s over the worst of her neurotic days (doubtful). I’d like to see Bern use her RA position & connections to help Piro get a dorm room if it turns out he truly is homeless & having financial difficulty with housing.

Is one of her books Tyke Psych? She should not have any position of authority over children with her mental problems and poor morals.

As far as the ‘test’ goes, so much for ‘studying’, eh?

We’ll see if Piro hits on Bernice for money or a place to stay, etc.

I think Bernice will lose interest when she gets to know Piro better. She seems to like the mystery and the chase. She will be bored with the reality of a real human being with all the flaws

She may be planning a future in politics.

I love Greg’s subtlety. Like Bernice who says, “I did not know that,” instead of “I didn’t know that.” Voilá – instant fake sounding talk.

Looks like Captain Kirk got Scotty to beam Piro straight to Bern! ’Bout time!

Re: ARGYTHREE “………he must actually be a student there. Now, why is he a homeless student?……….” . Students who don’t have housing are not that uncommon. A story was run last year about a CA college student who completed his degree living off the kindness of friends, i.e. crashing in lounges and other public areas, eating leftover event food etc. They have scholarships for tuition but are not covered for residential expenses.

Hopefully next week will start a story arc staring LUANN!!!

Probably won’t happen for another two months.

maybe Dr. Heald is a faculty member at Mooney, or Piro’s advisor.
