This retcon is ridiculous. When we first met Ox (in high school), he was so dumb that he didn’t know the meaning of even basic vocabulary words. Now Team Evans throws out all consistency in the character, just to make a joke.
The whimsical portrayal of her ladyship reminds me of a friend of mine who purchased novelty/gag documents of nobility for himself and his wife when they visited the town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales, also known simply as “Hay.” His wife had continued to use her maiden name, which was Bales. So, of course, her certification of title designated her as Lady Bales of Hay.
Incidentally, the town, though small, is a destination for bibliophiles as it hosts literary festivals and has over 20 book shops, some with unusual specialty inventories.
Trusty, good-hearted Oxford plays his part perfectly and young Lady Snootly works with him. She is learning self-confidence and having fun! Luann may well take some satisfaction in accomplishing something of value for her young charge!
Luann was fortunate to have Oxford join in with her….
Terrific, a bright glow of sunshine! It’s nice to see Ox, and Luann being so pleased, and little Downtown Abbey Far being do delighted! Just keep in mind to get ready to ripped back in the darkness with Ann, Les, Pru, Mr. Grey, and who knows else to come. Interesting if the darkness starts with the solar eclipse Monday.
There are so many places in the US directly named for/after things in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales!
-
There’s New Jersey (of course named for the Brittish isle)… there’s Baltimore (after the estate of the Calvert family, and the title of the Proprietor and then Governor of Maryland, also a town in Ireland named Baltimore)….there’s places named Essex, Sussex and Wessex…. there’s Northumberland, Aberdeen, Chatsford, New Gloucester, Cornwall-on-Hudson (in NY state), New Hyde Park, Conyngham (PA), Sunbury (after Sunbury-on-Thames), Woodstock, Isle of Wight, etc…
-
We all might as well slap on a pair of Dungarees (jeans), plug in our accumulators (a kind of rechargeable battery), shoot down the lift (elevator), pack our baggage in the boot (trunk) of our car or lorry (truck), make sure it’s filled with petrol (gas), then have a ride over to our local barrister or advocate (lawyer)‘s office, for an afternoon chat and a spot o’tea (I think that’s a spot of tea)!
-
….Or maybe just pop in a Wallace and Gromit feature…. or something all British-y like that….
OK Greg, this is fun, if totally uninformed and unrealistic. I’m a mentor. And BTW the word for the person I mentor is not mentor-ee but MENTEE. Please do some research first.
I assume we shall see lots more of this sort of thing in the months to come, to convince us of Luann’s natural gift for “mentoring”. After all, Luann’s own history with higher education does make one question her aptitude for “teaching” as a career.
Puzz, although there are multiple people here who will like this link i am posting it as a gift for you from one list member to another, but everyone here can enjoy it (like a party where all are invited and wanted):

As a kindness to those who want to decide beforehand if they want to attend: it is the recent Arnold Schwarzenegger video.
Definitely time for at least a costume change – if not a return to another arc. The number of comments seems to be going down. However Fay’s facial expressions in each frame above are wonderful. Ingredients for a future superstar.
Fay is a good student, the kind most instructors like to have in their class. She picks up on things quickly; she’s enthusiastic and doesn’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming.
Im getting a real “Sweet Dee Reynolds” vibe here, which isn’t a compliment. Maybe Fay needs lessons from someone whose idea of acting is a bit more nuanced and subtle than " throw on a wacky costume and do funny accents." Don’t let Johnny Depp fool you: there really is more to it than that, and not everyone is gonna play along like Ox here.
I wonder whether Fay’s Mom realizes that she’s paying Luann to play tea-time dress-up with her daughter, just the way that Fay’s friends did for free back when she was 6 years old.
Way to go Luann and Ox you too, that curtsey was quite unexpected. All this little lady needs is a bit of confidence and she has it when she doesn’t have to be herself.
Hopefully Sunday night or Monday if we are still with Fay’s drama instruction – there will be a new costume – maybe Ninja would be great – encouraging Fay to let her aggressive inside get out. Alternately of course – I’m fine with returning to the lingerie show – or Pyramid marketing – or whatever AE is up to.

Where is shy, young Fay getting all those British names from? She’s got to be channeling a past life.

I dunno, wizardgoat…. sometimes people are shy because they don’t like who they are; when offered a chance to be someone ELSE, inspiration strikes.

See the March 7, 2012 strip for the extent of what Ox knows about “mentoring”. Today’s re-imagining of the character is totally ridiculous.
