Gunther, Gunther! You forget that you know about the proposal because you were eavesdropping! Your mother doesn’t know that you overheard, and she doesn’t know what you’re trying to get her to dish on!
This is a weird possibility, but maybe Greg is planning on surprising us tomorrow and maybe Miss Berger will have said yes. Not only will it throw readers for a loop, but it will also add drama to the story.
Mrs. Berger may have said yes, but she’s not telling Gunther. The question would come up immediately about where will Gunther live? Mrs. Berger wants to be clever about herding Gunther into the guest house with Les – because Gunther obviously won’t like it.
Gunther has turned into an angry jerk since everything that happened with Rosa. He needs counseling, and some anger management classes. He used to be one of my favorite characters. Not liking the changes in him at all.
What if Gunther plans to live with his mother till he’s 30 like many millennials do today? He could end up consulting Tiffany for advise on how to break up Uncle Al and his mom. Wouldn’t that be juicy.
I kind of hate the word trolling. It has become the new way to refer to suspense, or delicious anticipation and it has too many meanings to the point it’s nearly useless, but that being said, Greg is using the dramatic device of suspense, to foster delicious anticipation of the answer to the question by Al to Irma. She was clearly happy. What does that mean? And given Tiffany’s dad could marry Ann this would really raise all kinds of new story lines.
Gunther does not strike me as angry, either about this or in general; but despite being a supposed gentleman, he has maturity issues. He doesn’t know or doesn’t accept that his mother is not obligated to hurry up and tell him what’s she’s thinking.
Irma – "Gunther! Why haven’t You bought that Lovely Tiffany over for Dinner, lately?
Gunther – “Mom I……,”
Irma – "I think it was so nice of You to have brought Her over and introduce her to Leslie!
Gunther – “MOM!”
Irma – “That Poor boy has been thru so Much! Tiffany is just what the Doctor ordered! They Make such a Lovely Couple!”
Gunther – “MOM!”
Irma – "Gunthie, I have some Surprises for You! The first is Al is going to build a Detached “Tool Shed,” uh I mean, “Guest House” for You and Leslie to Live, far away from the safety and protection of “Us” Smothering Adults! Isn’t that Lovely?"
Gunther – “WHAT?!!?”
Irma – “And Al has gotten You a Job washing dishes at the Fuse, taking Leslie place when He’s off Duty!”
Gunther – “WHAT?!!?”
Irma – “Oh don’t Worry Gunthie! We’ll Keep Your old bedroom ready for You at the Main house for those times that Leslie is using the Guest House to Entertain Young Tiffany! After All, Loving Young Couples need Their Privacy, don’t You agree?”
Gunther – “WHAT!!!”
Irma – “Oh. Didn’t I tell You? Al and I got married at the the Justice of the Peace today! He’s Now Your Step-Dad! So He and Leslie are now family! Isn’t that Wonderful???”
Gunther – “……..”
Irma – “My Goodness! the Poor Dear was so excited over the Good News, that He’s Fainted! Weeeeeeell I think I’ll just let the poor thing lay on the floor for a bit! And when He wakes up, I’ll him about Us adopt this Poor Little Shannon Girl……,”
Have we gone into the role reversal mode? Gunther is hounding his mother, Tiffany is trying to rescue her father from Ann Eiffle, and Les is trying to expose his mother’s latest con job to protect his friends. Luann is just missing in action and only the “seniors” are dating.
If Mrs. Berger has accepted or is seriously considering accepting Mr. Grey’s proposal, I think she does have an obligation to inform Gunther. Especially if the plan includes the expectation of him sharing a “guest house” with Les. Gunther may behave childishly and still live at home, which I suspect is as much Momma’s doing as his own, but he is old enough to make a decision about where he wants to live, and deserves some advance notice so he can make other arrangements if he isn’t interested in the “guest house” plan.
The Gunther Grill!…. “It presses! It sears! It fumes! It even makes that little whiny sound, when it needs to let out steam!….the Gunther Grill….on sale now, at your preferred OkayMart!”
It could be called “trolling” if Irma knew that Gunther knew about the proposal and was waiting to hear about her decision, but she doesn’t know that he overheard. So she’s not trolling, just being evasive… but why? Stay tuned… ;p
I suspect it is a done deal. She’s smiling. I don’t think Irma would have a problem telling Gunther about her wedding; the bigger problem is telling him about the housing issue. But it will take time to build a guest house. Will the wedding be postponed until it is built? Maybe Gunther would rather move out if he can’t stay in his room. I think this is the part that will anger him, that she’s banishing him from the main house without having asked his opinion in advance. I can’t say that I would blame him. But he is an adult now and the house belongs to Irma.
Irma “Ma” Berger knows her little Gunny and plays him like a piano. She will tell him what she wants to tell him, when she wants to. She has irresistible Mother-Power!

If she had made a big decision, I think she would say so. To me, this delaying tactic she’s using is probably the same thing she did with Mr. Gray…

Wow, today’s strip has more padding than Keira Knightley cosplaying as Dolly Parton. More filler than a store-brand hot dog.
Still, it’s funny to see Ma Berger so obviously trolling her son.Faith :) almost 7 years ago

Mrs Berger must be related to Greg Evans. They both like to avoid answering simple questions, and they enjoy stretching out story lines for days.
