Then: Looking forward to being a senior in high school. Now: Looking forward to senior discounts. Then: Into hip-hop. Now: Looking into hip replacement. Then: Had dreams of being famous. Now: Accepting that will only happen if they name a medical condition after me.
Don’t worry Lu! Your list will get more boring as you go along. It is not the same when eveything is taken care of for you than when everything is up to you to be taken care of. The list is a true “ad – hoc” operation. It changes constantly.
“Add hours at work.” “Get second job.” Luann is scraping money for something. Maybe to move out of the nest. It’s time – and better material going forward. Could be interesting if Luann & Tara get a place together.
With the exception of the added work hours and additional job, all of those tasks could be completed within a week. Don’t be so dramatic, Luann – you’ll still have plenty of time to waste the Summer!
Jeeze Luann! If you think THAT current “to do” list is bad, just wait until you’re married with childern. THAT “list” will be 30 times as big. And that list will be on a legal pad because the “kids” will have that laptop and be playing “Overwatch” on it…..
Since March 27 our family has experienced an arsonist who tried to trap our five adults and three children (3 generations) in a burning house, have lived in hotels until last weekend; returned to a house with no furnishings, kitchenware, etc. My daughter began a job in Albuquerque and found a rental house yesterday… we are renting a truck to move all her stuff in two weeks. At work I am in the last weeks of a major project involving almost 100 documents. If all goes well today may be my first day of relative leisure in the last two months. Time to put your game face on, Luann!
Yet another “then” vs. “now” strip aimed at showing that the life of a young teen is fun, fun, fun and the life of a young adult is drudge, drudge, drudge. With that attitude towards young adulthood, is it any wonder that the creators would rather make strips about a 13-year-old than about a college student? Isn’t there any joy at all in college life any more?
This is such a cute and true Sunday foible. I like the way it shows how, in the last 5-10 years, we have gone from writing notes about to-do lists in cursive on paper, to typing them on a computer. Even more current would be doing it on an app on a phone/device/gadget. The shift into more adult responsibility is a nice segue from what Luann has been doing in the whole Fay arc. I know I always get accused of being an hopeless promoter of the strip, and of Luann herself of course, but this panel is one of the reasons why I still follow this strip after over 30 years.
The Puddles comments have me worried. Like in “For Better or Worse” I was emotionally affected (true) when the dog Farley died rescuing one of the children. The difference there was that Farley was not that old in comic time, and died a hero, and FBOW is somewhat based on a real family. However Puddles is getting pretty old for a dog. Please let’s not go there.
This isn’t a general “teenhood vs. adulthood” thing, per se. This is more so a “How a teen Luann feels about summers now, and worrying about her future” vs. “How a kid Luann has no idea what Grad School and gas prices going up can do to your insides”.
-
Or, pretty much, “the-day when Willy Wonka actually got a headache and regretted attending his first board meeting, at 19 years old”.
AIRMAN Thank you, and heads up since I think you will appreciate Fort Knox which is strip about a military family and their friends.

(On the more standard days it has wonderful jokes beyond the overt one, too, often little messages on walls or cabinets, small background images with their own jokes or coordinating jokes, changing clothing, etc.)
To give some more perspective on the " ‘Now Luann’ vs. the ‘Then Luann’ ", there’s this seemingly-unrelated article relating Adele with how Millenials now “feel as if they’re somehow ‘old’, starting at age 20-27”.

No, Luann. That’s just a list of chores. They shouldn’t take you more than a few days.
.
Here’s your to-do list for the summer:
1) Have a torrid love affair with Jack. Or Gunther. Or Tara.
2) Join a summer theater company. As an actor. Or an acting coach. Or a stage designer. Remember, you’re a genius at all three.
3) Go on a road trip with Tara.
4) Go to alt-indie concerts and movies that would be inappropriate for a 13-year-old.
5) Hang out on the beach when you’re not working.
6) Make plans to move on from Junior College to a four-year college.
.
That should make for a busy and memorable summer, the kind that college kids should have.
