Whether it’s the Vacuum Monster or the voices of Scary Strangers, Blossom’s safe spot is under the bed in the master bedroom.

Now that we no longer have any cats, we have a new, very, very quiet vacuum. I may have to borrow a cat to try it out.

Just wait until the people can afford a robot vacuum. Then under the couch, under the bed, and under low tables may no longer be an option.

Given the frequency of videos of cats on roombas, I would say those are cat compatible. Give me an upright or canister vac every time.

Although they have access for the other 16 or so hours in the day, I don’t allow my fur babies to overnight in the bedroom. They object to this rule. Therefore, in my house we refer to the vacuum as the cat getter-outer.

Hi all, can I please ask for prayers, healing vibes, orb bumps and boops for SheMc and her husband Jan? I’ve had a very sad letter from her this morning—she and Jan just lost someone extremely close to them and she may be away from BCN for awhile, as a result. She’s not authorised me to divulge all the circumstances so that’s all I can say for now, but I know she would want you all to know what was going on with her and know that she needs the strength of the Mega Orb now more than ever. I will be forwarding all your messages to her. ♥

Actually, the cat with the biggest problem when vacuum cleaners attack would be Lupin. He can’t hear it and won’t know its whereabouts until it’s right on him!

Before he retired to live in the bedroom Flynn, the alpha cat emeritus, favored hiding in cupboards. Not just for the acuum but also when Dymka, the new, young Russian Blue alpha came around. Flynn had carefully rearranged some stemware so that he fit in nicely with the cordials. He would hide there for hours while Dymka sat quietly outside the cupboard door and stared at it. This is why Flynn is a bedroom cat now.

When I was a kid our family had a cat that actually liked being vaccuumed. She was a world-class shedder and it got the lose hair out faster than a brush.

My Corgi loves to be vacuumed. One day Nikki (our black domestic) got curious and came out to see what he was doing. She lay down next to Frankie and I started to vacuum her. She decided she liked it and now when I bring out the vacuum she rolls over in front of it for her turn.

Sanibel is such a good hider, some days my retired mother has no idea where she is until I get home from work and she casually saunters out to greet me and demand dinner. (Mom has balance issues, so Sanibel sometimes finds her quite scary enough without the vacuum.)

Schroeder is still acclimating to the new digs, but he has no fear of the dog (Skyy was ecstatic to get a kitteh sniff!), and is learning to ignore Sally’s “I’m the sheriff here” posturing. Still won’t sit for a formal portrait yet, though. https://www.instagram.com/p/BsnipqWgMXM/

In my household, vacuum cleaners are not feared, but they are not to be trusted. Vacuum cleaners are closely watched just outside of the room or from an elevated position. Once the vacuum is put away, normal activities can commence again.

When McKayla was a percocious kitten and scared, she went up my leg, to my shoulder and then to the nearest other high object. And she did this at 1/2 the speed of light. It was quite painful.

If it’s not a broom, leave the room.

If it’s not a brush, split in a rush.

If it’s not a mop, leave the shop.

If it’s not a sponge, leave with a lunge.

If it makes a roar, get out the door.

If you hear a racket, don’t try to smack it.

When that thing hisses, there’s no time for kisses.

Another safe spot is the nearest resting human. The lap or between the human’s back and the sofa are the best options. For the safety of the human, using claws to climb to the top of their head is not recommended.

This reminds me a little of the ‘tornado’ episode from WKRP in Cincinnati. Les Nessman didn’t have the tornado warning announcement bulletin he needed. He had only the warning bulletin of what to do in case of Communist attack!

Les was told, “Just insert the word tornado where it says Communist!” It worked out OK … sorta! … :)

The Little Girl Cat is smart enough to check if the vacuum is plugged in and if I am near it when assessing the danger and the need to hide/go to higher ground. The Big Boy Cat hides under the bed the minute the cleaner is not in it’s usual place – until it returns to it’s usual place. I’m bad and will sometimes leave the cleaner out between doing rooms while I do another chore. Little Girl will occasionally give the vacuum cleaner a full body rub if she’s passing it and she’s determined it’s not dangerous.

It’s a good idea to be wary of brooms too. Brooms can reach under furniture and administer humiliating whacks.

After Saturday’s episode, I knew it was inevitable. I had a “school” dream this morning. I was teaching, had been absent for awhile and hadn’t left lesson plans for a sub, so I was questioning the students trying to figure out what they had done while I was gone.

    Sigh!

So glad I don’t have to worry about lesson plans or calling in sick ever again!
