It used to be that hackers did it for the fun of it to prove they could breach security. However, once organized crime found out it could be done, they decided to monetize it.
One thing I do not understand is why ransomeware works. Yes, they infect your computer. The infection can be removed. Oh, all your data is encrypted? So where’s your backup?
There is an adage I’ve heard ever since I had my first personal computer in 1980. You don’t have to back up all your data, you only have to back up the files you want to keep.
