Cowards! Please reconsider your knee-jerk reaction. When we have a person in WH who wants to censor words we must use every tool to fight back, not cave in!
Last time I was in Tucson there were only 2 things there. The Sonora desert and the Sonora Desert Museum. I hear Tucson has been filled with deserters from the east.
Excuse me, but for over 2 years we have heard the pretend POTUS mock, rant, incite, LIE, and curse while also tweeting constantly and it continues at all hours. Families, and that includes children, watch TV and have been introduced to a whole new level of nastiness and idiocy while the pres. gives interviews and speeches. Mr. Wiley didn’t write anything that America loving people haven’t thought and said many times since that bloated man came down that escalator.
With all due respect Ms. Spitz, I find your action to alter Wiley’s cartoon/comic, which does have a copyright, to be more offensive than the phrase GoComics chose to delete. Article 5 of the Terms & Conditions provides " Andrews McMeel Universal will not tolerate copyright infringement…" Perhaps your contracts with the artists allow altering their work, but I doubt the same. Your statement is ambiguous whether GoComics has chosen to “take away” the cartoon/comic that ran February 10, 2019 in its original form or will be cancelling your contract with Wiley to run Non Sequitur. That is an egregious error for an Editor.
Waitaminute! Jill Jorden Spitz’s email address — tucson.com — belongs to the Arizona Daily Star. I doubt that she speaks for GoComics. Not that this isn’t a perfect example of editorial cowardice. It takes more courage to speak truth to the masses who don’t want to hear it than to speak truth to power who might resent it.
So criticizing the Trumpkin is not allowed, but his incessant lying, bullying attacks on others, disgracing the office he holds, and attacking the nation’s allies is fine? The comics are available elsewhere.
Jill, No need to apologize, I understand Wiley’s right to free speech but people also have the right not to listen and rebroadcast (vulgar, hate filled, offensive) speech; especially in comics where children often learn to read. I like Non Sequitur and I hope someday Wiley will appreciate what President Trump is trying to do to make America great again.
I missed the whole thing but don’t think too many readers are that offended but I agree with your decision. If not now, when will it be too late to correct.
Well, go-comics isn’t the only shop on the block. Non-sequitur will appear somewhere else. If you’d be so kind as to tell us where that is when he moves, I’d appreciate it. Then I can drop my go-comics premium membership. If you can react all out of proportion to the situation, so can I. OBTW, I seriously doubt that Mr. Miller considers himself your employee….
It seems a lot of people here are addressing their comments and thoughts directly to Jorden Spitz as if she actually posted that here and might read it here. She didn’t post here and she’s not seeing your response. Odd dog posted her letter to him/her. If you want to her to read your opinion, you should send it to the email address provided on the letter.
In the military this is called “Inattention to detail.” People become complacent and fail to do their jobs. Our local paper dropped the strip with the same excuse. Given, Miller deserves a slap in the face and a hit in his wallet. However, so do those that didn’t watch what was going into their publications.
Please keep this comic. You are entirely overreacting. Probably hardly anyone even noticed the bad word all the fake outrage publicity. That was just an excuse for those who don’t like the strip. If someone doesn’t like it they don’t have to read it. Wiley is an excellent cartoonist and many people like it. So get over yourself.
Help! I am lost on all of this, just what is the problem with this strip? And I don’t see it being cancelled by GoComics, just some paper in AZ. Another And, as some have stated we all need to lighten up and remember we’re on a Comics website, if you’re offended by something…Don’t Read It!
Oh, and while you’re at it could you please remove Dick Cheney from the public eye as well? I believe he is guilty of using the same language but then he is such a patriot!
I’m curious. I don’t know where/how to find the “offending” hidden text, nor the “Easter egg” mentioned by some posters here. Not only have I not seen/noticed them, but I don’t even recall any prior discussion of the “Easter egg”, so I haven’t a clue as to why it might have been considered offensive.
I do wonder why Wiley would insert such things (whatever they were/are). Were they directed at particular individuals or organizations? Were they in response to communications from such individuals or organizations which we — or at least I — have not seen?
In any case, if the Non Sequitur strip is deleted from GoComics but can still be found elsewhere (e.g., ArcaMax), I will continue to follow it and not skip even a day.
I’m really really REALLY hoping that GoComics has NOT dropped the legendary, award-winning “Non Sequitur”, as rumors have it. (Being from Kansas City, where the parent company of the parent company of the parent company…..you know how it goes! OF the parent company of GoComics hangs out, I’d hate to think that, in the words of conservative pundit George Will, talking about Trump, and my words, talking about the Kansas City Star, that GoComics is NOT “a sad embarrasing wreck” of a comics website.
@russef: “February 10. See if you can be outraged from the scribblings (one whited out).”
Thanks for the reference, but…
What I see seems to be literally “scribbling”. I can’t make out any letters, much less words or more extended “sense”. And if anything is “whited out”, I can’t tell. And is the egg at the top of that cartoon the “Easter egg” that other’s have mentioned, or was that something on a different day? What I see is strange, but in no way “offensive”.
So has the copy of that page here on GoComics been tampered with?
Meanwhile, ArcaMax is indeed (currently/still) carrying Non Sequitur, but February 10 is completely missing. A different variation on censorship?
With all the terrible things on the internet, this was mild by comparison. Please bring it back. It is one of the best comics ever. Everyone makes mistakes. Forgiveness is the answer.
I think Jill is completely out of her element and should go back to her Magical Woods of Niceness for an extended stay until she recovers her sense of humor and perspective. Perhaps in the Magical Woods of Niceness Rehab Center.
@JSPITZ@TUCSONAZ.com, Okay Jeff, here are my two cents, While (Not Wiley) I also don’t condone sneaky forms of circumventing rules and standards, I only have one thing to say; Is there a way to have all the staff in charge of proofing, editing, and reviewing the comics we are allowed to see here in GoComicsland ? and send them to the White House in D. C. ? I think that that place needs a more thorough cleaning and disinfecting that whta we have in here, But I digress, I might already know the answer, But please have me an answer, Thanks in advance
I suggested the other day that they should use concrete instead of sewage. As the comic shows today, sewage, followed by a big plug of concrete, is even better.
I think all the kerrfluffle is a sad statement on both how do accept or don’t an apology…seems pretty puritanical at best. Also the word was duck, not the other one, so I’m worried it’s always possible to ‘see’ this…the great fear that somewhere someone is having fun…humm.
There is no reason to drop Non Sequitur, most people who read the comic didn’t even see the offending comment until someone decided to raise a fuss. Even when I went back and pulled the comics section out of the recycle bin and looked closely, I wouldn’t have known what it said but for all the commentary about it. Please let Wiley keep his freedom of speech.
Well, maybe Wiley should have known better, but I don’t think it deserves being pulled off all those papers permanently. A rap over the knuckles would have sufficed.
Dear Ms. Spitz,Censoring satire is gutless. You are an abject coward. Mr. Miller, nor any other satirist/cartoonist, owes you, or anyone else an apology for their work. I did notice a most (or all) of the newspapers pulling it also favor the Democrat party (the same as Wiley), so their decision was one of ethics rather than favoring Trump.First of all, most newspapers still have a certain amount of ethical standards and allowing profanity is not one they condone. One editor wrote that newspapers don’t have sufficient staff to catch this type of stuff anymore and Wiley knew it. Second of all, many young children read the comic strips (I have even before I started school thanks to an older cousin and her friends). Some, maybe not all, will catch that and be asking their parents about it. Television has become even worse. I remember George Carlin used to talk about the seven words you couldn’t say on TV and today you hear them regularly, even on prime-time TV and its all considered PC by the left. It shows how far the country has degenerated. Profanity is not civil discourse nor adds to the quality of a TV show. I am no prude when it comes to profanity or many other matters – I served in the US Navy where English was a “second language” and profanity was the “first language”. Wiley is a gifted cartoonist when his strips are non-political. As far as I am concerned, all strips that get political should be put on the editorial page (and require the cartoonist to put a little block stating “Political” so the editors and type setters don’t miss it).
