I do not love books for themselves. I like to have certain books about me to refer to but only because of the text. I have never collected books for their physical selves. I have never asked for nor wanted an autographed book.
— John Steinbeck, “Some Random and Randy Thoughts on Books” (essay)
[ Coincidentally, I could swiftly retrieve this recollected quote verbatim precisely because I own its anthological source, America and Americans, as an ebook. I’d like to think Steinbeck himself would be a Kindle enthusiast.]
Why does it matter what someone reads a book on just so they’re reading? I would never discourage reading at all. It’s a PITA but I used to try to read books via PDF years ago before I was gifted a Kindle. I had the app on my phone but I had a crappy phone so I started reading some books on my laptop via PDF. It’s tough so I eventually stopped but hey, at least I was reading! Now I have a Kindle Fire and I read every day and I also listen to books on Audible so on a daily basis I’m going back and forth between 2 books.
Some people that age (I include myself) need the bigger print that’s available on an e-reader. I mostly read on my laptop, but for trips, it’s a kindle.

When I’m reading any given book, I’d rather it be on paper. But the ability to carry a small library with me is not to be sneezed at.

Why should a “book” be defined as something on paper? A book is the author’s ideas, characters and plot and it doesn’t matter what format it’s in.

Ridiculously judgmental. A book is not the format, it’s the content.
