Spiders set their webs due to the breeze. A good healthy breeze that is full of air traffic of yummy food – you would want to catch as much as you can. Too much wind and you catch what you can… but with a smaller web. He just got a lucky spot! :)
Had a garden spider once who covered half a “wall” of my screen room with its web. Hooked it to the hedge. It was amazing. . .they’re a lot bigger than you’d think from photos and their legs are very long and fragile looking. Was there for days. . .

Two things, male spiders are generally: 1. smaller than the females, 2. don’t make webs.
