There’s a line about that at the end of Fiddler on the Roof, when the Jews are evicted from Anatevka. Golde refuses to leave the new owners a dirty house.
I am not known for cleaning. I used to be better at it, but since husband is home all the time (for the past 11 years) my cleaning schedule went away and it done rarely – basically if I notice something needs cleaning I do it – when I get around to it. (Laundry though done weekly.)
Our bedroom ac died last fall and we decided to wait until spring to buy a new one – so we have not had an ac in the our bedroom and husband has not been doing well, but we did not want anyone in the house right now to install it so we tried workarounds. Brought up our portable ac for our living room – it did not work either, etc. I suggested that since the spare bedroom (where my teddy bears live) was intended as a guest room originally it has an almost unused twin bed. He could sleep in the bed and I would make up something on the floor next to me so he would not be alone. There is a TV cable there that we could hook up to a TV. He went in and looked around. “No, it needs too much cleaning to be healthy to sleep in there.”
We finally gave in and ordered an AC to be installed. We moved the furniture in the bedroom in the room the night before so they would have room to work and be away from the bed. He saw what was on the floor under and behind everything – we spent a good deal of the night before dusting and vacuuming the bedroom.

And enjoying a clean house, things in the right place, clean bedsheets that appear magically, a well made bed, clean shirts…

Not me! My philosophy has always been “no woman on her deathbed ever said ‘I wish I’d kept a cleaner house.’”

It looks like she’s nesting. I hope she’s not nesting. She seems a bit…err…mature for nesting.

And at the funeral all the guests would say, “Well, she didn’t clean—THAT’S why it hit!”
