That thunderstorm effect in Panel 2 is incredible.

I’m not much into wearing shorts either… not because they don’t touch my feet, but rather I don’t see much use for them (aside from doing exercise like a jog for example or sleeping in them when it’s summertime)

Ask a simple question, get an angry Calvin for no reason.

Funny that Hobbes would ask that when he’s wearing a fur coat in summer.

I LOVE Calvin’s cranky little face! My kids made that face when angry. :)

Hopefully, he’ll stay that short all his life!!!

The other day we hit 47ºC, which is 116ºF. I always wonder how people can bear to wear jeans in those temperatures, but some do.

My mother bought us long pants that had to be cuffed up to fit, on the theory that she could then unroll the cuffs and extend the pants’ lifetime. To my recall, not even once did it work out that way: Knees go first. And the once or twice that she finessed that (iron-on patches), it turned out that the bottom of the cuff had worn enough to be a different color (or even worn all the way through) so when unrolled, the pants looked… quite odd. I didn’t care, but my clothes-conscious brothers were quite upset. Eventually we got a little better off (I now think) or she gave up and began to buy pants that were merely a little  bit too long.

Is Watterson criticizing his own artwork (Calvin has short legs)?

His reaction leaves me rolling on the floor, helpless with laughter.

In panel 2 Calvin looks like how Coach Jon Gruden looks 95% of the time……

That ARE short pants!!

Maybe I read this one too early before coffee but somehow it reminded me of the movie line:

“Hump? What hump?”

It’s the same reason Susie’s skirt comes down to her ankles when she wears one.

Actually, upon close inspection, it appears that like Calvin, Hobbes rear appendages are much shorter than his front appendages. And he has to wear a fur coat year-round. C’mon Calvin, burn him right back. Only way to maintain the master-tiger relationship.

Try pulling them up, Calvin.

I have that problem too Calvin. And I’m nearly 10 times your age.

Touchy, touchy.

But you’ll grow into them! And it builds character!

Ow. I guess when your legs are only a few inches long, shorts aren’t really short enough sometimes.

Way back when I was growing up and a young adult, shorts were short. Now they are long and come to my knees. Tickle the back of my knees. GIMME BACK REAL SHORTS!

Well, he doesn’t have to get short with Hobbes about it…

One of those self-aware gags where the characters call into question the drawing style. Suggests that it’s not simply an abstraction, but that Calvin really does have almost no legs at all. But- that’s true of the other kids in the strip as well. Susie has the same issue.

I feel your petite pain, Calvin. I buy Capri pants that come to most women’s upper calves so I don’t have to hem them. Sadly, I sometimes have to.

Look! Calvin’s legs are about a long as his hands! Hobbe’s legs about 1/3 as long as his hands. Now I gotta check out other strips.

I haven’t worn long pants since March.

I kinda have that problem-short legs.

Soooooo, Calvin IS wearing short pants?

I feel for ya, Calvin! I tried getting Capri pants and they just look like long pants that are a tad bit too short on me, or sometimes look like regular length pants. It’s extremely difficult to find actual jeans that fit in length that I don’t have to roll or hem… even among the petite selections.

Before I could get a pair of shorts, I had to have holes in the knees of my long pants.

He shouldn’t be so sensitive when everyone in his class has the same problem. Even Moe has legs about the same length.

Calvin does have some stubby, little legs.

Shortly, Calvin’s longing for pants will be fulfilled.

I also have short legs, cropped pants still reach my feet too.

That would be me, I buy Capri pants and they look like full length pants on me .

One size fits all. Really, ever try to buy men’s short pants? I don’t think they’re made anymore. All one can find are semi-longs that go below the knee.
