M’lady, you shouldn’t have to discipline those kids. It’s the job of the parents to do that. :/

Discipline is something you need to learn when as an educator when the pupils’ parents/guardians aren’t around.

When I was that age, I had a teacher who would bounce chalk erasers off peoples heads, complete with chalk dust, for those who weren’t paying attention.

I believe Lynn Johnston is telling us he believes as well as most of us do that there is a lack of teaching and discipline at home. Thank you Lynn

I found the really good teachers would in a friendly way shame the offending student in front of the class. I would say it would work 99 percent of the time unless that student was the class clown. Though it still unfortunate that teachers have to be discipline students in the first place.

I was always told to respect and obey the teachers.

Watching one of the aviation YouTube channels, I learned the Bernoulli effect is only part of the lift picture. There are at least two other identified effects that contribute and nobody claims to know it all yet. The next time I get on an airplane, I will probably reflect, “Engineers may know how a bumblebee flies, but they don’t know how this flies?” We all gotta go sometime, I guess.

Unfortunately, the parents want to discipline the teacher.

I had a third grade teacher whose husband was an alcoholic. She took it out on us kids. Later, I had a coworker who had the same problem. I ended up going to management over her.

The joy and fulfillment of teaching is tempered by the fact that we often have to teach kids who are not being properly parented, all the while being criticized by people who wouldn’t last a day as a teacher.

This country started to go to hell in a handbasket when teachers were no longer ALLOWED to discipline students or fail those those who flunked out.

Lynn’s Comments:

This line was delivered by a dear friend—a high school teacher who was very good at her job. Sadly, she said that “parenting” took up more of her time than teaching did.

Teaching is a great job, if it wasn’t for the students.

I have a friend who is a teacher, retired now. When her three children went off to college she agreed to pay for it unless they went into teaching. If that was their choice, they were on their own.

I went to parochial school in an era when corporal punishment was the norm. The good nuns were very quick with an ear tug or a swat (or two) with wooden rulers, yardsticks, and pointers.

However, if I ever went home and complained that the teacher hit me, I’d get it twice as hard from my father. As far as school went, my brother and I were guilty until proved innocent. He’d tell the teachers at the start of the school year that they had his full permission to deal with my brother and myself in any way they saw fit.

As a result, both of us did our best to stay out of trouble in school and usually avoided any negative consequences of our actions.

I think she’s doing a pretty good job of BOTH the teaching and the disciplining!

at their age – this is disrespect and lack of discipline. They know what to do and are choosing not to do it. You don’t want parents to be sitting in a middle school class. OMG !

I went to school to learn, and the kids who disturbed the class bothered me also…

I had some wonderful and gifted teachers and I remember them even 50 years later.

I also learned that the teachers who didn’t prepare a good plan “welcomed” the interrruptions…

Junior High/Middle School is about the worst age ever for getting kids’ attention.

I worked as a sub for 3 years and feel her pain. Never again!!

My 8th grade math teacher used to REEK of booze when he came to school ! (He also worked in a bar part time on the weekends from what I heard) We had a substitute teacher half the time. One time ,he was explaining something to me at my desk & I could smell the booze on his breath. (Looking back I should have said something)

use an overhead projector. Never have to turn away from the people you are talking to (and supervising)

This comic strip does not show off Miss Edward’s better qualities. Aside from her unrealistic complaint about having to discipline, Miss Edwards has turned writing an essay into a punishment. It also appears only the most talkative, attention-hungry kids are worthy of the teacher’s notice.

She speaks volumes with that last observation.

Unfortunately, these days teachers are less-so educators and moreso facilitators of government propaganda.

Kids by their nature will push all the boundaries they can. Even the most well behaved child will when put in a single room with 20 or more of their peers and only one adult to mind them.
