I remember reading in one of the anthologies that Bill had an argument with some marketing guys and the exchange ended in the same way in the final panel. For me, I think this was the start of when Bill decided to stop changing and stay an old curmudgeon. Not an insult, it’s just how he is and he wanted to be happy and at peace. I mean, hell, nobody knows where he lives but it’s somewhere with a newspaper since he was reading Pearls Before Swine and agreed to do a collab with the artist for a week (even revealed that his phobia of using machines was not understated).
I’d like to see the rest of this where Dad attempts to help Calvin understand life is not as simple as we wish it would be. There was a daily strip where they started discussing obscene art if I recall. It basically ended where Calvin got upset Dad was trying to lay out that maybe it’s not so simple.
When this strip first appeared and it was delivered to the newspapers, I wonder how many of them called someone up to complain that the coloring of the strip was wrong?
First printed 3rd February 1991, just two months before the first part of Sin City, by Frank Miller, was published using the same high contrast art style; must have been something in the air at the time.
Once, when I was little, it was really bright outside, but it was too early to get up. So I got a book, but I couldn’t see the title, for some reason. Ever since, I thought the light did something to the book.

Calvin likes dark stuff.

For someone who can’t add 5 +4, Calvin exhibits an astounding vocabulary and understanding of the mechanism of sight perception.

Not indifferent Physics notions for a child who , at school , is always sent by the principal .

Logic according to most kids: If they want it, that’s the correct answer.

My kids are like that. It’s their way or “Forget you, Dad.” .

Anyone need further proof that Bill Watterson was the greatest cartoonist in history?

What is “chroma”???
Prey about 4 years ago
Sometimes he´s right, sometimes the coloured bits are people making things too complicated.
tripwire45 about 4 years ago
I remain amazed that for a kid who hates school and studying that Calvin has such insights and knows words like “hue,” “value,” and “chroma.”

Another example of Watterson’s genius at art and depth of expression in his strips. Wish he were still active in comic art.
vaughnrl2003 Premium Member about 4 years ago
Calvin’s idea of black and white is valid. True or false. A binary view of the world is perfectly valid. Just more complicated than one would think.

Love the lack of outlines in the black-and-white parts! Very artistic.
