Just finished rereading Swallows and Amazons, a favorite escape novel. The youngest child was 7, and was given a pocket knife as soon as he learned to swim âwithout touching the bottom of the lake.â It was simply assumed that the kidâs big brother would teach the kid how to use the tool safely.
