We have a cat like that. I call her “isocat” (as in isobars): In her best of all possible worlds, nothing would ever EVER change. Except for more goodies more often. As long as they are presented in the appropriate goodie location.
Way back in the 1960’s one appliance dealer in our little town put a Lionel Sant Fe passenger train in their showroom window for several Christmases. Every time I pass by I look over at the window. Silly, I know but heck, some year one might be there again. :-)
At a pull over for doggie potty break our dog saw a snake poke its head out of a hole. Every time after we stopped there the dog still checked out that hole! Friendly snake, not poisonous.
We were commenting on something similar this morning. When one of our cats sees a bird or lizard, he will return to the same spot day after day to see if it came back.
When my daughter was little, my father-in-law would tape big, store bought apples to his own apple tree so she could “pick” a good one! Loved him for that.
My dog is very ritual/tradition oriented. She even creates her own. I put a treat in a cardboard TP tube, push the ends shut and toss it near her as I am out the door to work. I was surprised the first time when I came home in the evening and watched her get it out of a hiding place and proceed to chew it open to get the treat. She even has different hiding places now.

Maybe Roscoe smells the odor of another dog that is doing the exact same thing.

Maybe Earl could hide one in his shirt pocket and drop it on the ground when Roscoe’s not looking.

Years ago, I used to hide my cat’s treats in my sock drawer. Eight years have gone by, but opening my sock drawer still gets their attention.

Years ago our dog Nathan once saw a snake sunning itself on the fence. He checked that exact spot for the snake daily for many years.

Sniff, Sniff is pretty good, but Snoof, Snuff is really smelling for it.

B.F. Skinner wrote extensively about the power of random reinforcement … amazing what it can do.
