Shrinkflation makes it harder to use the proper amount of ingredients called for in recipes. Many recipes were written in a time when the standard size food can was 16 ounces. Now many food cans have been reduced to 14 ounces or even less.
I’m more upset about shrinkage than shrinkflation. That’s a euphemism for shoplifting. Gangs are invading stores and ripping off thousands of dollars worth of high-end products and walking out of the store. Security guards are outnumbered and unarmed, so they just take videos. If the cops arrest them, prosecutors won’t prosecute because judges just let them go due to the Covid situation in prison, not for a non-violent crime. I say throw them in jail. If they get sick, they brought it on themselves.
Another benefit of having Biden and the democrats in charge. Don’t forget this famous quote…Obama on Joe Biden: ’Don’t Underestimate Joe’s Ability to F**k Things Up’.
A few years ago, a pound of Nathan’s hot dogs went from 16 to 14 ounces. Earlier this year, that 14 ounce package became 12. My question is, do they use the smaller hot dogs for their July 4 hot dog eating contest?
It really sucks when you’re trying to make an old recipe where it calls for an 8-ounce package of something and all you can get is a 6-ounce package. You either have to buy a second package to get the extra two ounces or you have to figure how to reduce the other ingredients by 25% to get it to come out right.
It’s also a diet thing. “100 Calorie Bag!” Of course, you’ve got to eat five. Or the individual bag of trail mix or potato chips that only has ‘147 calories per serving’… But in the fine print it proclaims there are five servings in the small bag.
This has happened to ice cream. I remember when it came in half a gallon sizes, but now it’s much smaller than that. Not only that, they raised the price… so you’re paying even more for even less. It’s pretty sneaky.
At one point I had three packages of toilet paper in my basement, same brand, purchased over a few years. Each package contained 18 rolls, and approximately the same total area measured by square inches (within 2%). But the print on one declared it “18 double rolls = 36 rolls,” a second said “18 giant rolls = 57 rolls,” and the third proclaimed “18 value rolls = 72 rolls.” Enough said.
Same crap with “serving” sizes. I find a food whose nutritional info is reasonable, only to find the small box/can/whatever is supposedly 4 servings. A pint of ice cream is often listed as 6 servings?
Don’t get me started on orange juice. A half gallon of juice used to be 64 ounces. Now it’s 59.
I wrote Tropicana to complain, and got boiler plate back about how they were holding the price line to help with family budgets. Disregarding that families have to buy more to keep giving their kids the same amount.
So I no longer buy Tropicana, and look for brands that still have 64 oz. or off brands, which frequently taste better than Tropicana.
Boxes of Triscuits used to be a pound, now I think they’re down to 8 or 10 ounces. The really messed up part is that for a long time they kept the boxes the same size, and claimed “some settling may occur during shipping and handling”. Same thing with pop-tarts, they’re practically little squares now, but the boxes are the same size they always were.

I’ve watched for years as cans of tuna shrank in small steps from 8 oz. down to 5. But now 8-oz. cans are back — labeled as Family Size.

This is a corporate scam perpetrated from the right to attack unions case in point Hostess said they could no longer compete.
So they forced their work force to leave and disband their union Hostess rebounded raised the prices on their food and shrunk the portions.

That’s why they can claim reduced sugar, salt, and fat in their products.

Even happened to “family size” meals. Used to, Salisbury steaks came 6 to a box….now it’s 5 at the same price.
