With my eyesight I can’t even see the durn cracks. I sit on one so why should I be worried about stepping on one? Besides, my mom died long ago so no worries about breaking her back.
I am almost 65 and, if I am not walking with anyone other than my daughter, I will make the effort not to step on cracks – at least where cracks are evenly spaced. I also count things like telephone poles, cars, livestock, houses, anything that is not TOO bunched together and only if I am bored. If I have my cell phone, then nothing gets counted. LOL
As a child in the 50’s this was one of the nonsense rhymes we used skipping rope.“Step on a crack,You’ll break your mother’s back;Step on a lineYou’ll break your father’s spine. Step in a ditch,Your mother’s nose will itch;Step in the dirtYou’ll tear your father’s shirt.

Just asking, but does the superstition still work when your mother is passed on and you have a stepmother?

My Mom would tell me every time I shivered someone was walking on my grave site.
There must have been a matching band on it when I would go skiing.

We do have sidewalks in our ‘new’ neighborhood, but the concrete they are made of was so weak that you can’t walk on them without hitting cracks.
ctolson about 3 years ago
Generally because the sidewalk sections have heaved up or sunken down and you might twist an ankle if you do.

Better to step ON them than to trip over them.

Ma is 91 and I still avoid stepping on cracks. Can’t be too careful at her age. ;)

I can’t say that I really take note unless the slabs are uneven. They often are here because of trees and a long-ago installation.
